Temporal data obsolescence: modelling problems

Proceedings. Fifth International Workshop on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (Cat. No.98EX157), 1998

Data and knowledge bases model certain aspects of the world. When the state of the world changes faster than our ability to discover these state changes and update the data repositories accordingly, the confidence on the validity of data decays with time, and software systems running in such environments have to cope with the decay of confidence in the data ...

A framework for low level analysis and synthesis to support high level authoring of multimedia documents

5th IEEE COMSOC International Workshop on Multimedia Communications, 1994

We have designed and developed a hierarchical framework for composition of multimedia documents. This framework forms the basis of an important analysis technique for developing high level authoring tools. From the perspective of aiding the task of multimedia production, the emphasis has been placed on the generality and uniformity of the framework and on support for new techniques to improve ...

Choosing a grad school advisor

IEEE Potentials, 2002

The decision to attend graduate school to work on a Masters or a PhD degree should not be taken lightly. It involves a potentially long time commitment as well as a substantial financial outlay. Aside from deciding on a disciplinary specialty/degree at a particular university, perhaps the most important issue is the choice of a graduate advisor. Indeed, this latter ...

  • Temporal data obsolescence: modelling problems

Data and knowledge bases model certain aspects of the world. When the state of the world changes faster than our ability to discover these state changes and update the data repositories accordingly, the confidence on the validity of data decays with time, and software systems running in such environments have to cope with the decay of confidence in the data lest they run the risk of giving wrong answers and behaving erroneously. This gradual loss of confidence in stored data is termed information obsolescence, and it is inherently a temporal phenomenon. We have come across such a problem when designing an information system for traffic monitoring and control in a large city, and investigate some problems related to this modelling task. We propose two approaches to deal with information obsolescence, the analytical approach and the algebraic approach, and show how both can converge to a general, temporal treatment of obsolescence. Our immediate goal is to try to approximate and reduce the whole problem of monitoring and controlling obsolescence of information to a purely temporal phenomenon, so that we can model the system using conventional temporal database technology.

  • A framework for low level analysis and synthesis to support high level authoring of multimedia documents

We have designed and developed a hierarchical framework for composition of multimedia documents. This framework forms the basis of an important analysis technique for developing high level authoring tools. From the perspective of aiding the task of multimedia production, the emphasis has been placed on the generality and uniformity of the framework and on support for new techniques to improve the authoring environment. Specifically, this framework supports flexible synchronization and flow control as well as a range of interactive, continuous, and discrete media in a uniform fashion. We adopt the hierarchical composition approach in order to support a style of analysis similar to the semantic analysis performed in programming language translation. This analysis capability provides a robust base upon which a number of potential high-level authoring facilities can be built including resource analysis for conflict detection and resolution, interactive specification and editing of the temporal relationships among multiple media materials, and automatic synthesis of candidate solutions for detected problems. We examine various important aspects of this framework and describe how the potential high level authoring tools can be implemented using its analysis capability.

  • Choosing a grad school advisor

The decision to attend graduate school to work on a Masters or a PhD degree should not be taken lightly. It involves a potentially long time commitment as well as a substantial financial outlay. Aside from deciding on a disciplinary specialty/degree at a particular university, perhaps the most important issue is the choice of a graduate advisor. Indeed, this latter choice may be intimately tied up with the selection of a university as well as the degree. This is especially true when seeking a PhD. If the MS degree is your goal, the choice of graduate advisor may not be so critical, at least initially. But it can still very much affect the long-term outcome of your graduate studies.

  • Research on E-School Construction in Universities of China

Studied the current situation and experience of the E-school (electronic school) construction in universities of China. Analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of the three E-school system technical route which are respectively based on c s model, on Louts Domino/Notes and on J2EE. Put forwards that the E-school system has three-layer structural model (network infrastructure platform, public support platform and application integration platform) and four functions (coordinated office, operations management, resource management and public service). Discussed the guiding ideology, principles and strategies of E-school construction.

  • (Is) computer and communication technology against the use of social pedagogy (?)

The limitations and boundaries around information resources were disappeared. Children's primary period covering ages in the lower grades in learning the social environment and human relations as a basis should be taken and this time the computer and communication technologies' support should be used as a need in learning. Learning the information in primary education is the basic and high school information will be deeper with computer and communication technologies in a more conscious and purpose to serve in a manner to be programmed. Computer and communication technologies for learning interests, curiosity and the need have wide opportunities to increase to respond. To benefit from this technology to every student who requests information can be easily reached.

  • Data extraction from Web forums based on similarity of page layout

Web forums contain a wealth of information resources. Forum data can be widely used in areas such as Internet community mining, information retrieval and public opinion analysis and so on. This paper solves the problems of what should be extracted and how to extract from the Web forums. Aimed at the limitation of current methods to extract data from Web forums, an automated method is proposed to extract metadata from Web forum pages. The method processes in two steps. We firstly recognizes the topic-block by making full use of the special layout of the Web forum pages, then extract metadata from the topic-block by making use of statistical regularity of the metadata, the whole process done without manual work. Experimental results show that this method performs well both in adjustability and accuracy.

  • Information extraction from complex circular charts

The paper is concerned with the recognition of circular charts (disks). The application domain is tachograph disks. These disks exhibit typical properties of circular charts but are more complex as different types of information are present at the same time and there are serious artefacts that hinder the recognition process. The method starts by analysing the characteristics of the greyscale image to separate the background from the recorded information. The position of the disk and its centre are then established. Finally, the orientation of the disk is determined and the information (recorded in a circular manner) is read and converted into a linear representation. Experimental results of testing against professionally prepared ground-truth show an average accuracy of 94% in the recognition of the target information.

  • Construction of University Digital Library Resources under the Network Environment

This article discusses the concept of digital libraries and its main features. By introducing advanced digital library experience and technology of foreign colleges and universities, it presents that China should formulate an overall plan to specify the direction and objective of construction and set up clear constructive missions and functions based on its specific circumstances as well as learning from foreign universities. It also analyzes the existing problem in university digital library, and put forward the accordingly countermeasures and suggestions on the construction.
