These high-performance applications place stringent requirements on the digital storage and memory hardware as well as the managing software. New hardware and software show how specialized digital storage and memory can work together with high-speed processing to enable these applications. In Figure 1, Jensen Huang, the chief executive officer of nVIDIA, Santa Clara, California, is shown demonstrating that GPUs provide a way to continue the increase in processing speed, even with the slowing of Moore's law.

This paper describes a 3D Integrated Circuit (3DIC) architecture of a burst image sensor (BIS) with embedded digitization and digital storage. This architecture also proposes a new technique to further increase both the frame rate and the stored image capacity at the cost of a spatial resolution reduction. A 2D monolithic demonstrator that takes into account the constraints of a future 3D-IC imager has been fabricated. Experimental results are presented showing that a frame rate from 5 up to 45 Mega frames per second can be achieved. This fully functional approach paves the way to the very first in-focal-plane digital BIS.

  • PRTuner: Proactive-Reactive Re-Replication Tuning in HDFS-based Cloud Data Center

With the expansion of storage components in cloud data centers, component failures become prevalent. Although data replication can be exploited to protect against data loss, unfortunately, each time storage components fail, the burden incurred by the data block restoration process is not negligible. Re-replication should be performed in a careful manner to avoid creating a load imbalance on the remaining storage datanodes while maintaining the reliability level. In this paper, we propose PRTuner, which forecasts resource utilization for the whole cluster and tunes the re-replication rate dynamically and proactively in order to minimize performance impacts on regular cluster jobs while ensuring the reliability of the system. PRTuner also enhances proactive re-replication with an additional reactive feature that minimizes performance degradation in the case of inaccurate prediction. Simulation results demonstrate that PRTuner is able to minimize performance impacts on regular cluster jobs for both highly and lightly utilized clusters while maintaining the systems reliability.

  • Recent Advances in Music Signal Processing [From the Guest Editors]

In this special issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM), we survey recent advances in music processing with a focus on audio signals. Eleven articles cover topics including music analysis, retrieval, source separation, singing-voice processing, musical sound synthesis, and user interfaces, to name a few. The tutorial-style articles provide an overview of theory and applications and discuss main advances. Although music processing has benefited a lot from traditional fields, such as signal processing, we hope to convince the reader that the rich and challenging problem domain of music also has many things to offer to signal processing and other research disciplines.
