    In this paper, we present an advanced interpolation algorithm to up-scale high definition (HD) and full-HD streams to 4K ultra-HD (UHD) videos. The proposed method basically adopts the 4-point-based Lagrange interpolation. When the interpolated pixel value using Lagrange interpolation is invalid, the order Lagrange polynomial is reduced for selecting more reliable results.   • Super-resolution for 2K/8K television using wavelet-based image registration

    We propose a super-resolution method to convert spatial resolution from 2K to 8K to utilize existing 2K HDTV video for 8K UHDTV broadcasting. The proposed method uses image registration for wavelet multi-scale bands of 2K video frames considering future hardware implementation to real-time processing. This image registration consists of alignment and assignment procedures. The wavelet multi-scale bands are extracted using wavelet decomposition of 2K video frames. The alignment is processed from 2K video frames to its wavelet low-frequency bands. By using the alignment result, the assignment is processed from its wavelet high-frequency bands to super-resolved high- frequency bands. After these alignment and assignment procedures, super- resolved 8K video frames are reconstructed using wavelet reconstruction with 2K video frames and their super-resolved high-frequency bands generated in the assignment procedure. Experiments showed that the method provides objectively better PSNR and SSIM measurements and subjectively better appearance than conventional super-resolution methods.

  • Proposal of value-added service based on real-time automatic content recognition

    ACR (Automatic Contents Recognition) technology is a technology for automatically recognizing contents, and mainly recognizes contents using audio signal processing technology. The reason why ACR technology is necessary is to recognize the content currently being broadcast and provide an additional service suitable for it. Because of this necessity, internationally, ACR technology is selected as a standard in ATSC 3.0. In Korea, IBB (Integrated Broadcast and Broadband) service is included as domestic UHD broadcasting technology standard. In this paper, we describe the standard progress of ACR technology as domestic IBB standard and discuss why ACR technology is needed in actual broadcasting environment and future development direction. In particular, there is a limitation that the standardized part can only be provided by UHD TV. UHD TV Terrestrial broadcasting started in May 2017 based on ATSC 3.0 for the first time in the world. However, considering the domestic situation that more than 90% of users watch using set-top boxes, the number of households receiving UHD broadcasting directly is expected to be less than 10%. In addition, UHD broadcasting can only use UHD TV purchased in 2017 to use additional information service using ACR technology. DTV broadcasting will continue until UHD 100% broadcasting will be available by 2027 because the average TV replacement cycle is about 10 years on average. Accordingly, the time to replace the TV with UHD TV is expected to take more than 10 years. In this paper, the technology and direction to solve these problems are proposed.

  • A Low-Cost Slice Interleaving DSC Decoder Architecture for Real-Time 8K Video Decoding

    High resolution and high frame rate video including 4K and 8K is increasingly popular, however its real-time decoding using H.264 and HEVC is challenging due to its high hardware computational cost and large memory requirement. In contrast, the Display Stream Compression (DSC) video decoder requires much smaller hardware and easily supports very high pixel rates. We present a low- cost DSC decoder utilizing a slice interleaving architecture, as well as four designs that utilize the architecture implemented and synthesized in a 28 nm CMOS standard cell process. The designs are able to perform real-time decoding at frame rates up to 94-107 frames per second (fps) for 8K UHD and 376-430 fps for 4K UHD, both in 4:4:4 mode with a throughput of 3 pixels per clock cycle. The frame rates are doubled in native 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 modes. The designs have gate counts of 161K-282K in minimum-sized NAND2 equivalent gates and main memory of 36.9KB-54.7KB to support 8K UHD.

  • Subjective Quality Comparison of UHDTV Versus HDTV in a French DTT Scenario

    This paper presents the results of subjective quality tests conducted at TDF, France, in late 2017. This study aims at showing the relevance of a DTT technology switchover in the French market. Both HDTV and UHDTV are compared, under realistic DTT constraints regarding viewing environment and targeted bitrates. From experimental results, it statistically appears that UHDTV with HDR features can brings significant quality improvement over HDTV.

  • Visual Quality Assessment Considering Ultra HD, Full HD Resolution and Viewing Distance

    Interest in multimedia content is rapidly increasing. In recent years there was extremely progress in improving Quality of Experience (QoE) in multimedia systems. As the next generation of TV, Ultra High Definition Television (Ultra HDTV) is attracting more and more people's attention. Ultra HDTV can provide a new viewer experience. In the case of HDTV, the observation distance plays an important role. If the observer sits further away from the television, that is the optimal viewing distance, and he may lose the benefit of HDTV. The results showed that for the case of non-optimal viewing distance, viewer's preference of Ultra HD resolution is not significantly higher. The result for the optimal viewing distance is very dependent on the video content and the bitrate. In our case, base on a questionnaire, it was found that 82 % of respondents owning Ultra HDTV do not sit at optimal distance.
