One scheme presently used to accomplish the required U and V downsampling, called frame- based color subsampling, is thoroughly analyzed. In addition, field-based color downsampling is analyzed and compared with the frame-based color downsampling. The maximum vertical and temporal resolution of the original U, V signals is 1050 tvl and 30 Hz. An analysis in the vertical-temporal Fourier- transform domain shows that the best possible vertical and temporal resolution of the frame-based approach is 525 tvl and 15 Hz. For the field-based approach the maximum possible vertical and temporal resolution is 265.5 tvl and 30 Hz. The fact that the temporal resolution is reduced by one half in the frame- based approach leads to blurring of horizontal edges on moving objects, although in quasi-stationary picture sequences this approach performs well in the sense that vertical aliasing artifacts can be reduced by the use of a proper vertical filter.<>

We observe that depth patches extracted from the depth map containing smooth regions separated by curves, can be decomposed simultaneously by a low-order polynomial surface and a piece-wise constant signal. In our model, the polynomial surface component is regularized by least-square polynomial smoothing, while the piece-wise constant component is constrained by total variation filtering. The model is effectively solved by the alternating direction method under the augmented Lagrangian multiplier (ALM-ADM) algorithm. Experimental results show that our method is able to handle various types of depth degradation under the designed signal decomposition model, and produces high-quality depth recovery results.

  • Image colorization based on the mixed l0/l1 norm minimization

    This paper proposes a new image colorization algorithm based on the mixed L0/L1 norm minimization. Introducing some assumptions, a problem of recovering a color image from a grayscale image with the small number of known color pixels is formulated as a mixed L0/L1 norm minimization, which is solved approximately by an iterative reweighted least squares (IRLS) algorithm. Numerical examples show that the proposed algorithm colorizes a grayscale image well using a small number of color pixels.

  • A Monolithic Color Processing Circuit

    The application of linear medium scale integration principles to the color TV receiver has led to an economical monolithic integrated circuit which performs the functions of 3.58 MHz color signal reference generation and chroma demodulation. Operation of the circuit in either an APC reference loop, burst injection locked oscillator mode or as a crystal ringing amplifier allows the receiver designer the necessary flexibility to meet his goals. Furthermore, a wide latitude in colorimetry can be achieved by proper choice of relatively few external components. The monolithic circuit, which measures 44 × 58 mils, contains reactance control element, reference amplifier/oscillator, buffering stages to provide signals for phase detector and color kill functions, and two demodulators. Utilization of this IC in the various color TV receiver systems is discussed.

  • Digital signal processors for encoding/decoding color TV signals

    This paper will report the design of two 14.3MHz digital processors for the conversion of a composite video signal into chrominance/luminance components and vice-versa. Their implementations in 2μm CMOS required 147K and 75K transistors, respectively. Automation was used in the development of the cell and layout procedures.
