  • System identification and control synthesis for a benchmark problem

    In this paper we apply the integrated system identification/H/sub /spl infin// control synthesis approach to the IFAC 1993 benchmark problem using the minimal amount of process information revealed. The resulting performance compares favorably to those using time-invariant control design techniques, and achieves prescribed performance for small and medium levels of plant uncertainties. For strong plant variations, the performance is inferior to most adaptive-based designs. An attempt to minimize input saturation effects by modifying the design objective function is also included. The present work conducts statistical confidence analysis with estimated noise variance and Fisher distribution.

  • A unified LMI approach to reduced-order controllers: a matrix pencil perspective

    This paper addresses the existence and design of reduced-order controllers for a rather general class of control design problems which can be characterized in the LMI framework. By incorporating certain matrix pencils into the LMI based formulation for solving the problems, this paper presents a unified controller degree bound for the problems in terms of the minimal rank of the matrix pencils with respect to their generalized eigenvalues in the unstable region and at infinity. When the full-order controller exists, this paper shows that there exists a reduced-order controller if one of the matrix pencils has unstable finite generalized eigenvalue(s) or infinite eigenstructure. Moreover, this paper demonstrates that the computational problem of finding the controllers with such new degree bound is convex by providing LMI based design methods for constructing the reduced-order controllers.

At last, this paper incorporates chaos algorithm into the particle swarm optimization algorithm, and proposes a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on chaos searching to calculate the optimization parameters, and the optimization guidance is introduced. The results of actual runs show that the proposed intelligent integrated algorithm provides a efficient and applied way to resolve the problem of optimization control for the complex strong correlation coupling, time-varying delay industrial process, and provides an effective and new idea to implement the global optimization control for process industry.

  • Two degree optimal steady tracking controller design

    This paper addresses the robust steady tracking problem when the system under consideration is subjected to norm bounded time-varying uncertainty, and the reference input signal and the external disturbance under consideration are the signal set with known dynamic characteristic polynomials. The controller design procedure is partitioned into deadbeat control design for nominal system and optimal steady-tracking control design, by using two-degree control scheme and Youla parametrization. With the deadbeat controller set and the exact formulas for computing robust steady performance measure presented by Khammash (1995), the optimal steady tracking design problem is converted into a finite dimensional l/sub 1/ optimization. The design method presented is simple and effectiveness.

  • An algorithm for integrated structure and control design with variance bounds

    This paper presents an approach to integrate structure and control design. The objective of the problem is to find: (i) the optimal values of the structure parameters, e.g. stiffness, damping ratios, and actuator location parameters, etc.; (ii) an optimal stabilizing state feedback controller such that the active control energy is minimized subject to: (a) the prespecified RMS constraints on the outputs, and (b) the constraints on structure parameters. The algorithm is given in terms of LMIs, and the convergence is guaranteed. The solution is optimal in the "local sense". An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • On Structurally Constrained Control Design with a Prespecified Form

    This paper deals with the decentralized overlapping control of interconnected systems. It is shown how the existing results aiming at designing a decentralized controller of a certain type such as static, dynamic, finite- dimensional linear time-varying, and sampled-data can be utilized to design a decentralized overlapping controller of a desired form, in order to achieve the design specifications. It is known that quotient fixed modes (QFM) of a decentralized control system are fixed with respect to any general (nonlinear and time-varying) decentralized control law. Generalization of this result to the decentralized overlapping control problem, i.e. the case when the control structure is only partially localized, is not trivial at all. The notion of quotient overlapping fixed mode (QOFM) is introduced and it is shown that a mode of the interconnected system can be shifted by means of a general decentralized overlapping controller if and only if it is not a QOFM. It is then asserted that any interconnected system with no unstable QOFM can be stabilized by using an appropriate finite-dimensional linear time-varying controller. This work takes advantage of the new developments in analysis and design of decentralized control systems. The efficacy of the results is elucidated through a numerical example.

A robust design method based on operator theoretic approach for the nonlinear process with time-varying delays is discussed. This paper applies the proposed design method to the water level control of the experimental process.

  • Integrated machine and control design for reconfigurable machine tools

    We describe a systematic design procedure for reconfigurable machine tools and their associated control systems. The starting point for the design is a set of operations that must be performed on a given part or part family. These operations are decomposed into a set of functions that the machine must perform, and the functions are mapped to machine modules, each of which has an associated machine control module. Once the machine is constructed from a set of modules, the machine control modules are connected. An operation sequence control module, user interface control module, and mode-switching logic complete the control design. The integration of the machine and control design and the reconfigurability of the resulting machine tool are described in detail.
