    This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is about the life cycle processes, methods, and techniques used by systems engineers, software engineers, and other engineers to develop and modify software‐enabled physical systems. It provides the opportunity for readers to learn about (or review) some background for the coverage of software‐enabled systems (SES) development. The digital elements of an SES include digital hardware and the software that senses, measures, regulates, and controls the physical elements, including the digital hardware. Software became larger and more complex to support the increasing applications of the more powerful computers. The evolution of self‐driving vehicles further increases the central role of software in these SESs. Some engineered systems include naturally occurring elements and purposefully engineered elements. Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems.

    The distorted river bends often occurs in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, which poses a great threat to the life and property safety of the people in the beach area. It also brings many difficulties to the safe operation and defense of flood discharge and river regulation projects. Scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of research on the abnormal river regime, and have achieved good results by adopting artificial bending and straightening or river engineering regulation measures to control the distorted river bends. After the artificial cutting of Donglu reached the goal of lowering the Tongguan elevation, but the reasonable cutting ratio, cutting section and other conditions should be chosen to achieve successful cutting and good results. In the future, the occurrence mechanism and evolution rule of abnormal river regime should be discussed deeply, and predictive research should be carried out to eliminate or mitigate the harm of abnormal river regime.

    Dams are of major importance, primarily because of their use for generating hydroelectricity and irrigation purposes. This has resulted in the construction of a number of dams in potential areas over the years. As there are a lot of risk factors associated with the existence of these dams, it has become the need of the hour to develop a proper monitoring and regarding the opening of the shutters thereby management system for maintaining a safe water level in dams. Mismanagement of dams can lead to manmade disasters. Currently dams in our state are being monitored and controlled manually. This manual intervention can increase the probability of error and also results in time lag in decision making. The aim of this project is to design and implement an IoT based Disaster Monitoring and Management System for Dams (IDMMSD). The proposed system involves real-time monitoring of water levels of a group of dams under study. Water levels may vary due to drastic changes in water levels of connected rivers or lakes, or due to excessive rainfall in the catchment area. The proposed project includes a mechatronics system to open the shutters at the heights pre calculated. The system comprises of sensor nodes, smart controller and communication system. The proposed system is an app based IoT system which will monitor and send real time parameters related to Dam (gate position, water discharge, water level) and weather conditions (rain fall, temperature, humidity). There will be two modes for operating the software i.e. Autopilot mode and Manual data mode. The system also includes features like SMS alert to the people of the locality and SOS to rescue operations in case of adverse weather conditions.

Using sieve method as the example, the comparability between aerosol equivalent diameter and volume of aerosol mass subset was analysed. Based on this, the function relation between aerosol mass and aerosol equivalent diameter distribution was established, which can be extended to the other process of measuring equivalent diameters based on counting method. All these can provide the theory foundation for aerosol mass measurement model founded on the counting method.

  • Analysis of the Price Coupling Mechanism in the Day Ahead Electricity Markets

    The electricity price variation on the spot market and the electricity price increase in recent times are subject to controversy due to the incomplete understanding of the market mechanism. The coupling mechanism of electricity markets is based on increasing social welfare, being defined as the sum of the producer's surplus, the consumer's surplus and the revenues from the congestion. Thus, the market with the lower price exports electricity to the market with the higher price. The paper presents several numerical examples for understanding the coupling mechanism and the effects and particularities of the coupled functioning of the electricity markets. Also, the impact of increasing the share of renewable energy sources and support schemes on the negative prices recorded in the coupled electricity markets is analysed.

  • Model Predictive Control with exponential data weighting for flood regulation

    In this paper, a new control strategy is suggested to alleviate the problem of occurrence of floods due to uncontrolled discharge of water from dams. Simulations are carried out based on real-time data of the actual flood scenario which occurred in Surat in the year, 1998. This flood occurred on account of uncontrolled outflow from Ukai dam located upstream of Surat city in Gujarat, India. In this paper, Model Predictive Control (MPC) with exponential data weighting is proposed as a control technique to solve the flood regulation problem. The simulations are done for three different values of exponential weighting factors. Finally, the results obtained using MPC with exponential data weighting for one such exponential weighting factor have been compared with the results obtained using simple MPC and manual control. Simulation results indicate that MPC with exponential data weighting have some added advantages over the simple MPC, because in MPC with exponential data weighting, current states are given more weight-age than future states.

  • Stability Analysis of Earth-rock Dam Slopes based on Big Data Fuzzy Ant Colony Clustering

    The soil material, structure, construction, operation and management conditions are all influence affecting the stability of earth-rock dam slopes. The analogy and cluster analysis methods are usually used to solve such multi- influence analysis problems. The common statistical classification method has sensitivity to the calculation process and requires high data parameters, so it is difficult to obtain the optimal result. The ant colony clustering algorithm simulates the method used by ants to solve the optimal path problem through bionics theory, and can obtain better calculation results. Based on the ant colony algorithm, the fuzzy theory is introduced to optimize the parameters of the ant colony clustering process to realize the fuzzy ant colony clustering calculation of the stability of the earth-rock dam slopes. The calculation examples are validated by clustering method, simulated annealing algorithm and ant colony clustering method to prove the result and advantage of the proposed method.

  • High Efficiency Bandwidth Electrically Small Antennas for Compact Wireless Communication Systems

    The RF bandwidth of systems that are constrained into electrically small volumes are often limited to the resonance bandwidth dictated by the radiation quality-factor of the antenna according to Chu's limit. Still, many systems, both legacy and emerging, such as in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for applications in the Internet of Things (IoT), require the ability to communicate amongst various systems that may not contain the available electrical volume to support conventional transmission of desired signals. We propose a novel electrically small antenna enabled through Direct Antenna Modulation (DAM). The design of the system utilizes a capacitively loaded loop antenna (CLLA) integrated with symmetrical high-power and high figure-of-merit (FOM) GaN transistors that optimally modulate an input BFSK signal to allow for high-bandwidth radiation, despite the radiation Q-factor of the antenna. The system was prototyped and measured, achieving a 47 efficiency-bandwidth product improvement over a conventional CLLA, surpassing aforementioned limits.

  • Accurate Automated Volumetry of Cartilage of the Knee Using Convolutional Neural Networks: Data From the Osteoarthritis Initiative

    Volumetry of the cartilage of the knee, as needed for the assessment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA), is typically performed in a tedious and subjective process. We present an automated segmentation-based method for the quantification of cartilage volume by employing 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). CNNs were trained in a supervised manner using magnetic resonance imaging data as well as cartilage volumetry readings given by clinical experts for 1378 subjects. It was shown that 3D CNNs can be employed for cartilage volumetry with an accuracy similar to expert volumetry readings. In future, accurate automated cartilage volumetry might support both, diagnosis of KOA as well as assessment of KOA progression via longitudinal analysis.

  • Impact of Natural Gas Price on Electricity Price Forecasting in Turkish Day-Ahead Market

    The electricity is a regular commodity that is being sold and bought in a highly transparent and efficient market in Turkey. The market is operated by EXIST and an hourly energy price is formed for every hour in the day-ahead market. In Sept. 2018, EXIST also found a central natural gas market in Turkey which enables a ground for all shareholders in the natural gas industry. This study examines the impact of natural gas prices formed in the market on the electricity price. Different predictors are tested to lower the mean absolute percentage error. Addition of past natural gas price into the forecasting model reduces the error from 15.85% to 14.31 % when the average of the last two weeks' natural gas price is used. This may indicate that the current natural gas price affects the electricity market two weeks later. And the final model also reached the 6.67% error for a Saturday, which is a significantly accurate forecast for a volatile electricity market.
