Since the EOTF was universal and fixed by the physics of the CRT, SDR standards have been typically expressed in terms of the complementary Opto-Electrical Transfer Function or OETF. Unfortunately, viewing the video pipeline solely in terms of the OETF (e.g., BT.709) and EOTF (e.g., BT.1886) is somewhat ambiguous. The resolution of this ambiguity requires the inclusion of the Opto-Optical Transfer Function or OOTF. This paper explains this ambiguity and why it is important for HDR. It closes with a description of an OOTF for HDR that is compatible with the OOTF of existing SDR standards.

  • The design of the SDI multiplexed digital audio data format analysis software

    In this paper, the SDI data stream format and the principle of the multiplexed digital audio are introduced, and the digital audio packet format and the AES/EBU digital audio format are analyzed in detail. Then, the SDI multiplexed digital audio data format analysis software is developed with C++ language. This software can achieve the function of de-multiplexing SD and HD SDI multiplexed digital audio separately, which includes analyzing the multiplexed format of audio data packet and audio control packet, extracting the numbers of audio packets, the samples of audio data, the amplitude of audio and the number of multiplexed channels in specified line. It is shown in experimental results that this software can accurately make the SDI audio data de- multiplexed according to users' needs, and the problems of the high costs and inconvenience of the de-multiplexing system based on the hardware are solved, which can be widely used in practical applications.

  • Audio and video over IP technology

    Due to the pocket structure of IP (Internet Protocol) infrastructure, it was difficult to use it in Broadcast applications where high bandwidth for large amount of data is needed. Greater chance of IP pocket loss compared to SDI signal failure and latency were biggest challenges for engineers to design equipment that will use IP infrastructure for transport and processing of Audio and Video content with ancillary data. With adopted SMPTE 2022 and 2059 series of standards, equipment manufacturers get the base to develop equipment that will use IP infrastructure even for the most critical live Broadcast applications. This paper shows details of SMPTE 2022 series of standards that is important for high performance video traffic over IP networks and recently adopted SMPTE 2059 standards that are solving the synchronisation problem and integration with existing SDI-based systems. When synchronisation problem has been solved, it was much easier to implement features like clean video switching over IP.

  • A survey on applications of high dynamic range technologies in consumer electronic devices

    High dynamic range (HDR) technology is one of various research topics in computer vision technologies, which has been actively being applied to cutting-edge consumer electronics products such as premium UHDTV, premium smart phones and etc. In case of consumer camera devices or mobile camera phones, HDR scene capture mode is commonly provided by combining differently- exposed images with standard dynamic range (SDR). In consumer premium TVs, there exist two kinds of HDR processing technologies: one is a tone mapping (TM) to render HDR content on SDR display, and the other one is an inverse tone mapping (iTM) to render a SDR content on HDR display. Especially, in the case of HDR ton mapping, some metadata for adjusting radiometric difference between a reference mastering display and various consumer TV displays were standardized as well as HDR signal encoding method. Currently there exist various organizations related to HDR standards: UHD-Alliance, SMPTE, CTA, ITU-R, MPEG, DVB and etc. Those HDR standard ecosystem members include movie studio, broadcasting, OTTs, TV/STB manufacturers, and etc. They have made efforts to create a next big opportunity of brand-new HDR technology on the basis of 4K UHD media. We will here review HDR technologies, standards, delivery system, and its CE industry trends.
