  • Tool wear of poly crystalline diamond in cutting Ti-6Al-4V alloy with high-pressure coolant supplied

    Titanium alloys have high strength, low density and corrosion resistance, and are used for aircraft engines and airframe manufacture. For dimensional accuracy, titanium alloy is machined using a metal removal process. High-speed cutting is an effective method for improving productivity. As the cutting temperature increases significantly in high-speed cutting, the tool materials require both good wear-resistance and heat-resistance, and the cutting parts must be cooled to achieve efficacy and efficiency. In this study, Ti-6Al-4V was turned with a high-pressure coolant supplied, and the chip configurations and tool wear were experimentally investigated. The following results were obtained: (1) In turning with high-pressure coolant supplied, the effectiveness of chip breaking performance was improved. In this case, the chip length was shorter with the increase in the coolant pressure. (2) In the case of a cutting speed of 7.50 m/s, large wear on the cutting part was observed at cutting with conventional-pressure coolant supplied by both the CVD coated tool and the cermet tool. (3) In the case of cutting with the conventional-pressure coolant supplied by the cBN tool, tool wear of the PCD tool was smaller than that of both the CVD coated tool and the cermet tool. (4) In comparing cutting with the conventional-pressure coolant supplied and cutting with the high-pressure coolant supplied using the cBN tool, the tool wear in cutting with the high-pressure coolant supplied was slightly smaller than that in cutting with the high-pressure coolant supplied. (5) Comparing the cBN tool and the PCD tool in the case of cutting with the high-pressure coolant supplied, the PCD tool could cut to a cutting distance of 4521 m. (6) In the case of cutting with the high-pressure coolant supplied by the PCD tool, which has a large diamond particle size, Ti-6Al-4V could be cut at the higher cutting speed of 12.50 m/s. (7) In the case of cutting with the high- pressure coolant supplied by the PCD tool, the tool wear of the PCD tool decreased with the increase in the diamond particle size.

    The main aim of this work was to show a new approach in using brazing technology (hard soldering) on thick film conductors. Metallic leads and thick film conductors on alumina substrate were used to verify brazed joints. A flame and conductive heat transfer methods were used for brazing of three braze alloys such as Ag15CuP, Ag40Sn and Ag45CuZn. The tested pattern was made using silver (Ag) and silver-palladium (AgPd) thick film pastes on 96% Al2O3 substrate by screen printed technique and followed by firing process at temperature 850 °C. Nickel-silver and nickel-chromium-titanium leads were brazed on the thick film conductors with subsequent evaluation of the shear and the pull strength joints. The results of this work demonstrated very effective brazing technology on thick film conductors without usage of protective atmosphere or oven.

Making and qualifying an NTP fuel that meets mission performance requirements is an essential first step. Graphite fuels and ceramic metal (cermet) fuels are of particular interest since these fuels have shown significant advantages over other fuel types. This paper will address the history of NTP fuel fabrication technology as related to the Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application, GE 710, and ANL nuclear fuel program, as well as recent efforts in recapturing heritage fuels and developing new NTP fuels. Substantial experimental databases and supporting documentation exists for the graphite composite fuel option. Some irradiation and high temperature test data is available for cermet fuels, but cermet fuels were never tested in prototypic NTP conditions. A first step in the development effort will be a fuel fabrication recapture effort to provide samples to show that the technology works and that the performance of the fuel is acceptable. Advances in fuel fabrication, materials processing, and coating technology are expected to improve and/or enhance future fuel development, maturation, and certification efforts. The current plan is to perform non-nuclear, separate-effects, and integrated tests to provide additional test data and insight into the capabilities of each fuel and to use that data to evaluate potential performance within an NTP engine stage.
