An Intentional Approach to Service Engineering

IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, 2010

Despite its growing acceptance, Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) remains a computing mechanism to speed up the design of software applications by assembling ready-made software services. We argue that it is difficult for business people to fully benefit of SOC if it remains at the software level. The paper proposes a move toward a description of services in business terms, i.e., intentions ...

Minitrack Introduction

Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008), 2008

The complexities, costs and brittleness of current information architectures, infrastructures and distributed software have provided impetus to emerging conceptualizations of the Service Oriented Enterprise (SOE)1 and its orientation towards on-demand, proactive computing. Some scholars have even predicted the demise of enterprise computing as we know it today given anticipated SOE capabilities2. The foundations for Service Oriented Enterprise (SOE) are rooted ...

An overview of the microgrid control architectures and their main functionalities is provided. The basic distinction between centralized and decentralized approaches is highlighted, identifying the benefits and characteristics of each approach. Centralized functionalities are formulated, and the results from their indicative application in a typical LV microgrid, adopting different policies in market conditions, are presented. Special focus is placed on intelligent decentralized control using multi-agent (MAS) technologies. The basic features of intelligent agents are provided, including practical implementation issues. Discussion about the forecasting needs and expectations and state estimation requirements at distribution level are also included.

  • An Intentional Approach to Service Engineering

Despite its growing acceptance, Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) remains a computing mechanism to speed up the design of software applications by assembling ready-made software services. We argue that it is difficult for business people to fully benefit of SOC if it remains at the software level. The paper proposes a move toward a description of services in business terms, i.e., intentions and strategies to achieve them and to organize their publication, search, and composition on the basis of these descriptions. In this way, it leverages SOC to an intentional level, ISOC. We present ISM, the model to describe intentional services, and populate the service registry with their descriptions. We highlight its intention-driven perspective for service description, retrieval, and composition. Thereafter, we propose a methodology to determine intentional services that meet business goals and to publish them in the registry. Finally, the paper introduces a set of transformations to bridge the gap from the intentional level to the implementation one.

  • Minitrack Introduction

The complexities, costs and brittleness of current information architectures, infrastructures and distributed software have provided impetus to emerging conceptualizations of the Service Oriented Enterprise (SOE)1 and its orientation towards on-demand, proactive computing. Some scholars have even predicted the demise of enterprise computing as we know it today given anticipated SOE capabilities2. The foundations for Service Oriented Enterprise (SOE) are rooted in current applications of service oriented architecture (SOA), service oriented infrastructure (SOI), business process and workflow, computing resource virtualization, business semantics, service level agreements, increasing standardization, end-to-end enterprise integration and other areas of applied and theoretical research.

  • Development research on SOA-based Postgraduate Education Administration Systems

Nowadays, "Information Islands", inadequate flexibility and reusability are primary problems existing in postgraduate education administration systems (PEAS). To solve those problems, in this paper, Service Oriented Architecture is introduced into Rational Unified Process (RUP) for developing integrated PEAS with much improved flexibility and reusability. Models devised in three core workflows of RUP: business modeling, requirements, analysis and design, are presented in sequence and the feasibility of those models is validated by a prototype implemented by using web services.

  • The Research on Data Resources Sharing of Water Resources Domain Based on Proactive Service

It is a key issue to the distributed and heterogeneous domain data resource sharing. In this paper a new mode of water resources data sharing is proposed from the point of proactive service. At first, a data sharing framework, called FDSWRDPS, is provided based on SOA and domain ontology. Then service factory is used for a design pattern of data integration subsystem. Furthermore proactive service is implemented based on event-trigger mechanism. Integrated domain data can be pushed to users automatically by using FDSWRDPS.

  • A customizable asset management system architecture based on extended-SOA

With the development of SOA from concept to application in recent years, SOA has been accepted and used by service providers. But it is producer-centric because service providers publish their services and service consumers must search available services to compose their applications. For those who don't have knowledge of programming, they can't customize services by themselves. As asset management system is complex and diverse, it is preferable to develop an asset management system that is customizable for system users. This paper firstly proposes an extended-SOA that makes the software system customizable for customizers, and then proposes a customizable asset management system architecture based on the mentioned extended-SOA, and finally gives a typical service customize process. This paper provides a general architecture for a customizable asset management system with which users can customize services by themselves.
