An empirical study of the time and effort for release stabilization on Linux and Chrome found that small teams controlled the stabilization effort, few changes were reverted, and the original developer didn't do much of the rework.   • Effects of Variable Part Auto Configuration and Management for Software Product Line

    LG Electronics Mobile Communications division developed the Variable part Auto Configuration and Management System (VACMS) to improve its current smartphone application development process. However, the effects of the new process using the VACMS have not been assessed yet. In this study, we compare the current process and the new process through a case study. The assessment results show that using the new process the development effort is reduced to 32.5% of that of the current process and the reuse rate becomes 2.34 times higher in Lines of Code.

  • On the application of data engineering to the configuration management of a hybrid simulator

    The development and implementation of an information model for the configuration management of a hybrid simulator is discussed. The simulator is used in the development, test, and evaluation of electronic guidance and control systems. It is modelled as a configuration hierarchy with logical access paths enabled via intersections between each level in the hierarchy. The model is implemented partially on an INGRES data base and partially in a UNIX™ directory structure. The mappings of the information model to the database schema and the configuration processes to the database operations are described.

  • Mining the Mind, Minding the Mine: Grand Challenges in Comprehension and Mining

    The program comprehension and mining software repository communities are, in practice, two separate research endeavors. One is concerned with what's happening in a developer's mind, while the other is concerned with what's happening in a team. And yet, implicit in these fields is a common goal to make better software and the common approach of influencing developer decisions. In this keynote, I provide several examples of this overlap, suggesting several grand challenges in comprehension and mining.

  • End to End Automation on Cloud with Build Pipeline: The Case for DevOps in Insurance Industry, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, and Continuous Delivery

    In modern environment, delivering innovative idea in a fast and reliable manner is extremely significant for any organizations. In the existing scenario, Insurance industry need to better respond to dynamic market requirements, faster time to market for new initiatives and services, and support innovative ways of customer interaction. In past few years, the transition to cloud platforms has given benefits such as agility, scalability, and lower capital costs but the application lifecycle management practices are slow with this disruptive change. DevOps culture extends the agile methodology to rapidly create applications and deliver them across environment in automated manner to improve performance and quality assurance. Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous delivery (CD) has emerged as a boon for traditional application development and release management practices to provide the capability to release quality artifacts continuously to customers with continuously integrated feedback. The objective of the paper is to create a proof of concept for designing an effective framework for continuous integration, continuous testing, and continuous delivery to automate the source code compilation, code analysis, test execution, packaging, infrastructure provisioning, deployment, and notifications using build pipeline concept.

  • Web notebooks as a knowledge management tool for system engineering trade studies

    We discuss the use of web notebooks as an integrated tool for conducting and managing engineering trade studies. The value of the notebook form is the ability to capture all typical components of an engineering trade study in a common interactive document form. The notebook form can also be displayed in a slide show mode for interaction with decision makers. An example trade is shown to represent the typical trade study components integrated into a single document form. In an accompanying presentation, an actual notebook would be used for the complete presentation. Application of this approach is being pursued as a knowledge management approach to overcome some of the current disparate capture of trade study text and data across multiple tools forms.

  • IEEE Standard for Configuration Management in Systems and Software Engineering - Redline

    This standard establishes the minimum requirements for processes for Configuration Management (CM) in systems and software engineering. The application of this standard applies to any form, class, or type of software or system. This revision of the standard expands the previous version to explain CM, including identifying and acquiring configuration items, controlling changes, reporting the status of configuration items, as well as software builds and release engineering. Its predecessor defined only the contents of a software configuration management plan. This standard addresses what CM activities are to be done, when they are to happen in the life cycle, and what planning and resources are required. It also describes the content areas for a CM Plan. The standard supports ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2008 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2008 and adheres to the terminology in ISO/IEC/IEEE Std 24765 and the information item requirements of IEEE Std 15939TM

  • A Software Managemente Method for the LUT

    The software management of the process has played an important role during the software development of the Lunar based Ultraviolet Telescope. Full requirement analysis, practical management plan, clear division of development stage, stage of software life cycle model selection, effective configuration management control, which is an unprecedented management method suitable for the development of optical load software. The final operation results of the lunar based optical telescope show that the method is applicable and effective, and provides reference and reference for China's space load software management.
