  • Social network visualization for interest in music

    In this paper, we addressed in social network visualization for people's interest in music. This visualization system designed for interest in music on social networks provides several capabilities: (A) visualization for friends who share the same interest in music, (B) to group people who share the same interest in music into categories, and (C) to recommend songs function for an increase in the common interest in music. These capabilities provide some essential capabilities for social networking analysis. Take the following for example: general users chat with others through instant messaging on social networks. Or perhaps, they would rather start up a discussion with other users. However, discussions of this kind that share similar interests can allow users to get to know others and improve interpersonal relationships. Afterwards, they can know their friends more about what they like and what dislike. In this dissertation, the research fellows need to handle the text information gathered from Plurk (the world-famous social network) to carry out regularization. We make use of the data mining method to analyze the information on the subject of music interest. We classify various types of songs. They also substitute these keywords called different degree of preference into the iSpreadRank algorithm to give different degree of preference. In our experience, this visualization system plays an essential rule in the analysis on social network.

  • The Impact of the Digital Learning on EFL Students' Critical Thinking Disposition

    College EFL students are learning in the digital environment due to the booming information and communication technologies. Fostering the critical thinking disposition, one of the important parts of critical thinking, is essential and necessary for the critical thinking cultivation. This study aims to investigate the status quo of the college EFL students' critical thinking disposition and the effect the digital learning environment has on fostering the critical thinking disposition. A total of 104 EFL students from a university in the south-eastern part of China were involved. The Chinese version of the Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CTDI-CV) was adopted, and semistructured interviews were conducted. The study shows that students possess positive critical thinking disposition in general. They have an obvious positive inclination to inquisitiveness but a weakly positive inclination to truth-seeking and systematicity. With more and time spent in the digital learning environment, the critical thinking disposition gets stronger, especially in the dimension of analyticity and systematicity. The results not only point out the features of college students' critical thinking disposition, but also offer suggestions for the future achievement of the higher education.

  • Preface

    How we reason about the continuous world around us is one of the central mysteries of cognitive science. This book is based on multiple decades of research in artificial intelligence (AI) on qualitative reasoning by my group but also by many others. Most of the qualitative reasoning literature assumes a strong artificial intelligence background, which is a shame because I believe it is extremely relevant across cognitive science. This book is my attempt to bridge that gap, to make accessible the insights and ideas that qualitative reasoning research has come up with to a broad audience of cognitive scientists. I hope it will also help AI scientists and engineers better understand the connection between AI and the other branches of cognitive science, because gaining insights across disciplines is why cognitive science exists in the first place.
