2020 IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium (RWS)

RWW2020 will be an international conference covering all aspects of radio and wireless. RWW2020's multidisciplinary events will bring together innovations that are happening across the broad wireless spectrum. RWS2020, this conference application, acts as the main conference for the entire RWW of events that includes the following conferences: PAWR2020, SiRF2020, WiSNet2020, and TWiOS2020 (IEEE Topical Conference on RF/microwave Power Amplifiers, IEEE Topical Meeting on Silicon Monolithic Integrated Circuits in RF Systems, IEEE Topical Conference on Wireless Sensors and Sensor Networks, and IEEE Topical Workshop on the Internet of Space IoS, respectively). In addition to traditional podium presentations and poster sessions, tracks for IEEE Distinguished Lectures, Sunday half-day workshops, Monday panels, and a demo session are planned. A RWW2020 plenary talk are a parallel IoT Summit are planned. A student competition is also planned.

  • A Machine Learning Approach for the Classification of Indoor Environments Using RF Signatures

    Efficient deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors primarily depends on allowing the adjustment of sensor power consumption according to the radio frequency (RF) propagation channel which is dictated by the type of the surrounding indoor environment. This paper develops a machine learning approach for indoor environment classification by exploiting support vector machine (SVM) based on RF signatures computed from real-time measurements. Results obtained demonstrate that the combination of received signal strength (RSS) and channel transfer function (CTF) yields a classification accuracy of 83.0% for identifying the type of the indoor environment.

Many researches have been done to replicate our vision in machines, and that is because a scene can contain a lot of information. In this study we are interested in obtaining heading information from sequence of images captured by a camera. There exist many ways to obtain heading information such as by using gyroscope or compass sensors, each with its own advantages and weaknesses. By using a camera, mechanical limitations which will disrupt the measurement of heading, such as wheel slippage, uneven terrain, and tilt can be avoided. With this proposed algorithm, heading can be calculated solely from the sequence of images. The results of our experiment show that heading can be calculated with an average of absolute error of 1.23078° in outdoor environment, and 1.02368° in indoor environment.

    In this paper, we developed the indoor positioning system with infrared (IR) beacon, and we evaluated the utility of the proposed system through a dynamic measurement experiment and a static measurement experiment with multiple IR beacons. In these experiments, we verified positioning capability of the IR system and the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) system in the metal shelves environment imitating retail stores. As a result, it is confirmed estimated position of the IR system is more accurate than the BLE system in dynamic measurement. The average positioning error was 147 mm with multiple IR beacons, and estimated movement of pedestrian corresponds actual movement.

We have previously proposed a minimum mean square error (MMSE) location estimation method using multiple items of sensed information as well the received signal power and shown that its estimation errors are smaller than those of the conventional method using only the received signal power. Machine learning has recently become attractive as an optimization algorithm, and in this paper we propose to apply machine learning with a back propagation method for indoor location estimation using multiple items of sensed information. Our proposed machine learning location estimation method is experimentally validated and compared with the MMSE method. The machine learning location estimation method was found to reduce the standard deviation of the location estimation error and increase the probability that the estimated distance is within 2.5 m of the actual distance.

    Femtocells were proposed to be used in indoor environments and increase the capacity of the cellular network. They are not part of the cellular planning of the local operator but its frequency of operation is the same used in the macrocell network.     Indoor environment monitoring system is an important part of building automation platform. This paper presents an indoor environment monitoring system. It collects various indoor environment data, such as temperature, humidity, PM2.5, CO2, formaldehyde, AC parameters, ambient light, etc. The system contains two layers: cloud server layer and data collecting layer. The cloud server layer provides cloud computing and cloud services, but it is not necessary. The data collecting layer consist of various kinds of environment monitoring. Each environment monitoring module processed its data and transmitted with cloud serves if it's necessary. The environment monitoring system is validated by its operation.

  • C-Map: Hyper-Resolution Adaptive Preprocessing System for CSI Amplitude-based Fingerprint Localization

    With the increasing popularity of location-based services, channel state information (CSI) has received widespread attention in positioning due to the fine-grained information it provides. However, the raw amplitudes of CSI are especially sensitive to noise and easily effected by the frequency-selective fading. As the expanding of test area, positioning is disturbed by random noise and insufficient resolution of features severely. In this paper, we propose Cluster-Mapping (C-Map), an adaptive pre-processing system for CSI amplitude-based fingerprint localization. This system models positioning as a classification problem, an adaptive processing mechanism is constructed according to the characteristics of CSI amplitude. C-Map mainly contains two parts: dynamic denoising and feature enhancement. In the dynamic denoising, effective features are screened out by clustering iteratively, without specifying parameters according to the experimental environment. In the feature enhancement, polynomial fitting with regularization is used to reduce jagged fluctuations, then the trend of variation over 30 sub-carriers are described by combining derivation with nonlinear kernel function. Extensive experiments are conducted in typical environments to verify the superior performance of C-Map for the preprocessing of CSI amplitude. Compared with the combination of mean and multidimensional scaling (MDS), the average positioning error of C-Map is reduced 28.1% in comprehensive indoor environment, and 19% in garage. Furthermore, compared with the combination of DBSCAN and principal component analysis (PCA), the average positioning error of C-Map is reduced 33.1% in comprehensive indoor environment, and 28% in garage.

  • Multivariate Polynomial Interpolation Based Indoor Fingerprinting Localization Using Bluetooth

    Comparing with mature outdoor positioning technology, the demand for indoor positioning is also becoming increasingly extensive. Fingerprinting-based localization using Bluetooth is a promising method for indoor localization. The localization accuracy mainly depends on the quality of fingerprints database, and we have to collect a larger number of training sites in order to achieve finer-grained positioning. However, the site survey for constructing a fine-grained fingerprints database is very time consuming and labor intensive. In order to improve localization accuracy under the condition of without additional fingerprints, we use multivariate polynomial function to construct the fine-grained interpolated fingerprints database derived from the coarse- grained collected fingerprints. Extensive simulation results verify that the proposed multivariate polynomial function interpolation based fingerprinting localization method can improve localization accuracy effectively.
