  • Work in Progress - The Role of Non-Engineers in an International Engineering Service Learning Project

    In May of 2004 and again in May of 2005, groups of students from the Valparaiso University chapter of Engineers Without Borders undertook a trip to the village of Nakor in northern Kenya to construct a water supply and irrigation system they had designed. Each of the groups that traveled to Kenya included both engineering majors and non-engineering majors. The groups learned a great many lessons, perhaps the most pleasant of which was the value of the presence of the non-engineering majors on the trip. While the engineering students and professor tended to focus solely on the engineering aspects of the project, the non-engineering students tended to focus on the social impacts of the project. The insight of the non-engineers was very useful in helping the engineering majors to recognize many of the sociological impacts of their work

  • Harmful Gas Sanitation Protective Distance Calculating Method Research

    This paper researches and discusses the calculating methods of sanitation protective distance, presents the skill of determination of parameter's value. Those factories who use or produce toxic and harmful material, must be set a protective distance from the sensitive area in spite of the factories are newly built, rebuilt or expanded built. But the calculating method recommended by the china state has many uncertain factors in practical calculating process, it is hard to determine the parameters and we cannot calculate the sanitation protective distance normally. Based on the case of soda-made trade, we analyses the practical calculating method of sanitation protective distance, discussed the actual skills needed in determination of the value of these parameters, introduced a specific calculation process and analyzed the corresponding factors. In addition, for the existing sewage enterprises, and based on the premise that had set a protective distance from hospitals, schools, residential construction and other sensitive buildings, considering of different conditions, this paper studied the calculating method of restrictions on the enterprise sewage conditions, and also gave the needed control indicator combined the actual conditions. The skills and methods given in this paper can be used for reference to environment impact assessment organizations, enterprise and environmental manage department.

    According to siphonic bedpan's work principle, siphonic bedpan with variational section flow channel is put forwards into application in this paper. Structure design optimization of siphonic bedpan's flow channel is discussed. Based on making use of Pro/E to conduct the parametrization modeling of the siphonic bedpan (the constant section bedpan and the variational section bedpan), and then adopt ADINA to simulate the flow field in the siphonic bedpan with not taking the filth into consideration. The calculation results of the numerical simulation demonstrate that variational section bedpan is better than the constant section bedpan in flushing and saving water. The results indicates the adoption of ADINA software to carry out sanitary implement's numerical simulation can improve the accuracy of the bedpan design and manufacturing consumedly, provides a theories analysis foundation for the engineering, design and application of bedpan.

The object of the game is for the player to establish transfer stations, incinerators, and sanitary landfills throughout a hypothetical region, and to make other assignments such that the collection, haul, and processing costs of the waste to be collected and disposed of are minimized.

    Presents an overview on the design and operation of a major USA west coast ocean outfall with emphasis on the maintenance necessary to sustain operational integrity of the ocean disposal system. Ocean disposal systems, by their mere size and presence, represent major expenditures of capital and routinely exceed $100 million. A planning, design, and construction period of ten years would not be viewed as unusual. Once commissioned as operational, such disposal systems are generally expected to provide relatively trouble free operation. This view is primarily due to costs and operational impacts associated with down time.

  • Main characteristics of product design in Brazilian sanitary metal industry

    Product design, in the majority of Brazilian markets, is still internal, since importation was forbidden until the beginning of the 1990s. In this context, the Brazilian government is worried about how to promote partnerships in order to minimize the problems in the private sector and has asked the Institute de Pesquisas Tecnologicas to identify the main characteristics of some sectors, focusing on project design as a competitive factor. Among the sectors chosen was the sanitary metal industry, a segment of the civil construction sector. The study was based on secondary data and some interviews with the main actors in the production chain, like designers, business union chairman and firms engineers, for a qualitative analysis.

  • Quality issues in enameling of ceramic industry products

    This paper details a set of quality issues associated with the enamelling of ceramic industry products. Enamelling is a common manufacturing process in the sanitary ware industry, where enamel is applied on the ceramic substrate to provide a coating of protection against corrosion and bacterial infection. This mass manufacturing process combines manual and robotic manipulation and presents unique quality issues. The issues identified in this paper are representative of a greater family of coating processes that deal with complex surfaces and pose special challenges for production and quality engineering departments.

  • Computer-based filamentous microorganism identification support system

    A computer-based filamentous microorganism identification support system was developed to assist field operators who encounter the bulking problem in a waste water treatment plant using the activated sludge process. An image processing system monitors the amount of the filamentous bacteria. If anything unusual happens, the filamentous/microorganism identification support system starts. The system leads an operator toward its user model, and identifies the type of the predominant filamentous bacteria. Based on the result of identification, a control is carried out and the effect of this control action is monitored by the identification support system. If the bulking is suppressed, the support system stops. Hardware and software features of the system are described.<>
