  • Development of autonomous flight control systems for unmanned helicopter by use of neural networks

    This paper describes approaches to develop command and control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). YAMAHA RMAX, which is an unmanned helicopter, is used in this study. The dynamics of RMAX is nonlinear, so that it is hard to develop autonomous flight control systems, but an efficient method to design controllers by training neural networks is proposed in this paper. Methods to develop controllers for feedback linearization and robust control systems are described and numerical simulations show the effectiveness of our method.

  • An FDDI network for tactical applications

    A fiber-optic tactical local area network (FOTLAN), based on the fiber distributed data interface (FDDI), that supports data packet traffic simultaneously with synchronous traffic is described. The current US Army LAN implementation is examined, and its limitations are highlighted. An overview of a migration path from the current LAN to the ATCCS (Army tactical command and control system) objective system using FOTLAN is presented to demonstrate how such a network can evolve.<>

  • Building fusion systems

    Information and data fusion is a discipline that provides the methods and techniques to build observe-orient-decide-act (OODA) capabilities for various applications. There are many ways in which these methods and techniques can be chosen to provide capabilities in each phase of the OODA decision-making cycle, and there are different fusion architectures, i.e., ways these methods and techniques can be applied, grouped and integrated. How one chooses the most appropriate set of methods, techniques and fusion architecture depends on a number of factors. This paper discusses the compromises and trade-offs of combining the methods and techniques and selecting the architecture for a specific system for each of the four phases of the OODA decision-making cycle. This is done based on the actual experiences of development fusion systems at Lockheed Martin (LM) Canada over the last ten years.

  • AMDRS, A real-time command and control concept

    The automatic mobile director and reporting system (AMDRS) was designed to provide continuous control of each field unit. Consisting of three major subsystems: control center, command computer, and field unit, AMDRS is intended to provide real-time control with a minimum radio-frequency spectrum usage. Both the control center and the field unit make use of visual displays. An automatic vehicle locator and director is included to furnish position information directly to a vehicle operator. All digital message functions are automatically handled by the computer including optimum unit selection. Among the advantages claimed for AMDRS are: 1) real-time command with a minimum of spectrum usage 2) instant direction without requiring the field unit operator to depend on maps or memory 3) a degree of privacy owing to digital communications 4) system flexibility allowing various degrees of implementation.
