    Nowadays, electroplating is used widely in industry to enhance corrosion, abrasion resistance,... of machine elements. Chromium plating is the most widely used, especially in technology restores the machine element when it was worn. The chromium plating layer of machine element will make changes the mechanical characteristics of substrate. In this paper, the fatigue of the chromium plating machine element with 9 micrometer thicknesses and substrate (AISI 1045 steel) was studied. The results showed that fatigue life of machine part after chromium plating is less than uncoated machine element. Micro cracks on chromium coating layer lead to machine element quickly destroyed. In addition, X-ray diffraction techniques (Cu-Kα radiation) is used to determine the haft-value breadth diffraction of chromium thin film at {211} diffraction plane. From the chart B - N relations could predict fatigue life of the machine parts.

Chrome plating is the most widely used, especially in the dimensions restore of undersized parts. The mechanical properties of details will change when chrome plating on. There are many studies show that the chromium coating greatly affects the fatigue strength of the machine parts. In this study, the fatigue strength of the substrate (C45 steel) and chrome plated with the thicknesses of 10, 30, 60, and 90 micrometers were examined. The results show that residual stress tensile and microcrack always exist in the chromium coating due to hydrogen embrittlement in the process of plating. As the coating thickness increased, the residual stress tended to decrease while the microcrack density increased. Decrease in fatigue life was observed for coated specimens in comparison to base metal. Fatigue strength goes down when chromium layer thicknesses increase. X-ray diffraction (with Cu-Kα radiation) technique is used to determine the residual stress. Microscope optics and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to evaluate the cracks of the chromium coating.

  • Development and characterization of cost effective wear and corrosion resistant HVOF sprayed chromite coatings and hard chrome plating

    Chromium is an essential constituent for the production of steel against degradation due to corrosion and wear. It is also used in the form of stable chromium oxide precursor in hard chrome plating (HCP). This study is divide into two parts. Firstly, chromite ore (abundantly available in Pakistan) from bulk form was reduced to an average particle size of 50 μm using dry ball milling. The obtained chromite powder was upgraded through gravity separation followed by magnetic separation. Secondly, the upgraded chromite powder was coated on mild steel substrate using High Velocity Oxy Fuel (HVOF) thermal spray system. Another hard chrome plating was made using chromic acid precursor. Structure, morphology, phases and elemental distribution of chromite powder and both coatings were studied using FESEM, XRD and EDS. Particle size distribution of chromite powder was analyzed using sieve analysis. Wear and corrosion rates of HVOF sprayed chromite coatings, HCP and mild steel were investigated. It was found that the wear and corrosion properties of both HVOF sprayed chromite coatings and HCP are superior to mild steel.
