  • Computer-based multi-media system on education of "Renewable energy technology; design and use"

    The availability of educated and trained people at all levels and in all engineering disciplines is a crucial factor for the successful implementation of any programme towards sustainable use of energy, as well as preserving the environment. While there is a broad appreciation of the need for energy and environmental education, only a few countries are actively pursuing teaching activities in this area. It is expected that with increasing pressures of fossil fuel scarcity and adverse environmental impacts of their use, more countries would make efforts towards providing renewable energy and environmental education. In the last two decades some efforts have been made to provide energy and environmental education, but most of these efforts have been made in the area of postgraduate level courses. Introducing relevant inputs into the undergraduate level courses in universities have not been taken seriously. The author has developed a multilevel course entitled "Renewable Energy Technology". This course can be used for the purpose of teaching renewable energy and environmental technology at undergraduate level of electrical engineering courses. This paper presents the course summary and course outline as well as method of teaching, method of assessment and their relation to course objectives.

  • A novel QoS routing scheme for MPLS traffic engineering

    Emergence of MPLS facilitates the implementation of traffic engineering. The aims of traffic engineering are to satisfy diversified QoS requirements and optimize network performance. QoS routing is an essential component of traffic engineering in MPLS networks. In this paper, we propose a bandwidth constrained QoS routing scheme with additional traffic engineering objectives (BCTE) used to establish bandwidth guaranteed LSPs in MPLS networks. The traffic engineering objectives considered in our routing scheme are to reduce call blocking probability and to balance network traffic load. To this end, we apply the max-flow problem and introduce a new metric named path saturation to out routing scheme. The simulation results show that, by taking traffic engineering objectives into account, our proposed bandwidth constrained QoS routing scheme outperforms widest-shortest path (WSP).

  • Power Electronic Building Blocks-a systematic approach to power electronics

Throughout the PEBB program, many modern paradigms have been studied for adaptation to power electronics. They are open plug and play architecture, cellular design, hierarchical design, integration, and concurrent engineering. The goal is to make power electronics more amenable to high-volume, low-cost, production. Furthermore, the expertise and complexity of power electronics is to be encapsulated and distributed within each building block. The key issue is the ability to integrate these elements, using high volume manufacturing methods.

  • Work in progress - SAGES: Podcast, wikis and emerging technologies in the engineering classroom

    Technology in education is seen as a powerful educational instrument and its integration, as a significant force driving change. An increasing number of research is linking technology-enriched learning environments to improved higher-order thinking skill and showing that, by using technology as an educational tool, students are better prepared for ldquoreal workrdquo skills and future success in this new technological society. In this report, we propose to address some of these issues by sharing our work in progress: the integration of podcasts, wikis, and emerging technologies in engineering instruction. We will first outline our selection of the various tools as well as the process we followed to select the technologies. We will then describe the SAGES project itself, using examples and best practices from its various stages. This will enable the participants to get a holistic understanding of how they too can effectively integrate established or emerging technologies in their own engineering classroom.

  • Web-Based Data Acquisition System of Wind Conditions and its Application to Power Output Variation Analysis for Wind Turbine Generation

    This paper presents a Web-based data acquisition system of wind conditions via the Internet, and its application to power output variation analysis for wind turbine generation. Wind energy is promising renewable energy, and is globally increasing. However, with the increase of wind power integration to power grid, the wind power generation is having a great influence on power system operation due to such issues as frequency and voltage variations. It is important to reserve generation capacity to suppress these variations and to schedule its operation. For this purpose, the authors have developed a Web- based data acquisition system of wind conditions via the Internet. The Web- based data acquisition system is automatically able to gather wind climate data measured at lighthouses operated by The Maritime Safety Agency of JAPAN. Based on the observed data, a short term prediction, for example a few hours ahead, of wind speed was constructed using neural network. Using this system, the authors could predict the wind power variations at each site, at simultaneous times and conclude that this work would be possible to forecast reservation power to suppress the wind power variations

  • Open network platform for multiprotocol communication

    Fast introduction of new functionality into the existing telecommunication nodes is very important task for software and system designers. One effective way to do this is to move part of the functionality to an additional external platform. By creating generic application components and putting them together, new functionality is introduced into the network. A framework for introduction of new application services for serving multiprotocol communications is discussed.

  • Distance Reading Education

    This paper is about a framework that would promote distance education in the Philippines. Its focus is on the development of reading comprehension among primary elementary school age Filipinos in the remote barrios where access to free education is not available. Modern technology such as mobile or satellite phones, solar power and internet will make this framework work in rural areas. Another important component is the willingness of the stakeholders to cooperate and support the project implementation. This paper hopes to contribute to the primary education strategy of developing countries like the Philippines to uplift the lives of their citizens especially in the rural communities.

  • Design and Modeling Remote Monitoring System for a Solar Power Plant

    In this paper we will analyze and study a solar power plant of a linear parabolic type after introducing it. Monitoring system via the Internet is designed for the plant according to present parameters. Besides studying different dynamics of the Internet as important components we discuss the quality and effectiveness of each Internet parameter in order to explain the Internet behavior. According to previous studies one important obstacle to implementing remote monitoring system is variable delays. We try to explain delay behavior by using results of this study and other projects. After studying delay behavior during different periods, dynamics related to the delay in the Internet are modeled by using system recognition technique. Wave Variable method is chosen as the best monitoring method based on the studies which were done on remote Monitoring methods and due to the variability of delays Internet. Solar power plants monitoring system via the Internet is finally designed and modeled according to this method and linear dynamic delay in the Internet.
