Improved convergence in the analysis of thin metallic gratings with thickness profiles

Radio Science, 2003

A combination of the Fourier series expansion method and the multilayered step method is applied to analysis of the scattering problem by a thin metallic grating with a thickness profile. The extremely large permittivity profiles of metallic gratings may affect accuracy of calculations adversely. The convergence of the Fourier expansion method is improved using the spatial harmonics of flux densities ...

  • Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization for Converged Access‐Metro Networks

This chapter describes how new 5G requirements are shaping the architectural design process, through the convergence of both data and control planes of the access and metro networks. It provides a brief introduction of the techno‐economic challenges posed by 5G's key performance indicators of large increase in capacity, number of devices, network reliability, and decrease in network latency. The chapter discusses the solutions that use wavelength switching in the optical access‐metro network to dynamically provide capacity to 5G mobile base stations from different computation centers in the metro area. It describes the main software elements being developed for the control and management of the network. Orchestration is the coordination of resources across a number of domains, disciplines and timescales so as to provision and maintain an end‐to‐end service. MANO is one such European Telecommunications Standards Institute project, for the management and orchestration of software‐defined networks and network function virtualization.

  • Improved convergence in the analysis of thin metallic gratings with thickness profiles

A combination of the Fourier series expansion method and the multilayered step method is applied to analysis of the scattering problem by a thin metallic grating with a thickness profile. The extremely large permittivity profiles of metallic gratings may affect accuracy of calculations adversely. The convergence of the Fourier expansion method is improved using the spatial harmonics of flux densities instead of electromagnetic fields normal to the surface of a metallic grating. In using the multilayered step method, the scheme used to partition the grating region and the distribution function of dielectric constant within each layer are examined.

  • The effect of sound velocity profile variability on range to the first convergence zone

A study of temporal variability in oceanic sound velocity structure was undertaken in order to determine its effect on the propagation of acoustic waves to the first convergence zone. A statistical analysis was performed using sound velocity profiles measured in 3 different geographic locations. The results give some basis for predicting temporal variations in range to the first convergence zone caustic for short term operations in a relatively fixed location.

  • Asymptotic Equipartition Property and Channel Capacity

Two of the main theorems in information theory are the source coding theorem and the channel coding theorem. This chapter introduces the asymptotic equipartition property (AEP), a mathematical tool based on the law of large number. Based on the property, the source coding theorem is presented. The chapter presents the channel coding theorem by applying the property to the relation between the transmitted and received symbols in a communication system. There are of course numerous types of channels, and they can be made arbitrarily complicated depending on the level of the modeling. The chapter concentrates on discrete memoryless channels (DMC). It describes one of the most well‐known channels, the binary symmetric channel (BSC). The chapter introduces Shannon's channel coding theorem, which relates the information channel capacity to the coding rate. For this purpose, the AEP and typical sequences need to be extended as jointly typical sequences.

  • Bounding the errors in constructive function approximation

In this paper we study the theoretical limits of finite constructive convex approximations of a given function in a Hilbert space using elements taken from a reduced subset. We also investigate the trade-off between the global error and the partial error during the iterations of the solution. The results obtained constitute a refinement of well established convergence analysis for constructive iterative sequences in Hilbert spaces with applications in projection pursuit regression and neural network training.

  • Fast converging formulation of differential theory for nonsmooth gratings made of anisotropic materials

Li's Fourier factorization rules have contributed greatly to the differential theory that is one of the most commonly used approaches in the analysis of diffraction gratings. This paper gives a differential formulation for nonsmooth profiled anisotropic gratings by taking into account Li's remark, but a coupled first-order differential-equation set is derived using only the Laurent rule. The present formulation is applied to sinusoidal and echelette gratings, and numerical results show that the present formulation provides significant improvement of convergence.

  • Point-to-point ionospheric ray tracing by a direct variational method

While the Haselgrove ray tracing equations are well suited to situations where the ray launch direction is known, they are less effective for situations where only the end points of the ray are known. In such cases, many rays must be traced from the launch point in order to home in on the landing point. An alternative approach is to directly solve the variational principle from which the Haselgrove equations are derived. Such an approach is well suited to the point-to-point ray tracing, but poses several technical difficulties. In this paper we overcome these difficulties and show that a direct approach can indeed provide an effective means of point-to-point ray tracing.
