  • Academic synergy through integrated mechatronic projects

This Innovative to Practice Work in Progress paper presents an approach to obtain synergy by implementing an integrated mechatronic project within a postgraduate program. Mechatronics has been a reference for synergetic integration of technology. However, synergy is obtained not only from technical issues, but through professional skills. Nevertheless, traditional education and industry standards focus only on the technical side. The study case is performed within the program Integrated Design of Technical Systems by implementing strategies such as integrated scheduling, integrated assessment and project proposal with application fields such as agriculture, robotics, health and mobility. This approach does not require additional credits for a project course, since the project lies underneath the courses. It has led to an increase of enrollment of students, which is significant during times when less engineers opt for further technical education.

  • Design-for-Control-Based Integration

An integrated design and control method is presented in this chapter for the nonlinear system with hybrid discrete/continuous variables. First, in order to simplify controller design, a design-for-control approach is presented to make the complex system to have a well linear approximation and controllable property. This integration method has the following characteristics: system task is shared by discrete design and continuous control: the easy-control property is considered at the stage of process design, upon which a simple controller will be designed latter for a robust global performance. Then, the robust design and control is integrated to guarantee system stability as well as the robust pole placement. Finally, effectiveness of this integration method is demonstrated first on the numerical simulation and then on the real manufacturing process.

  • Study on multidisciplinary integrated design of high-speed pantograph based on parameters design, dynamics analysis and optimal control

A multidisciplinary integrated design concept is firstly applied to synthesize optimum pantograph. Three disciplines are involved in the integrated design of the high-speed pantograph. They are the kinematics, the dynamics and the control. In this study, the objective function of the kinematics involves the curve of pan-head to guarantee the kinematics stability. Genetic algorithm is proposed to get the optimum design parameters of pantograph. Based on design parameters of high-speed pantograph, the lumped mass model is deduced. So, the dynamic contact force is obtained. When a high-seed train is running, the contact pressure of the pantograph-catenary is changed. So, the objective function of the active control is to minimize the contact pressure fluctuation by using optimal control. The integrated design pantograph not only satisfies the kinematics, the dynamics and the control constraints but also has synthesized optimum pantograph. The results lay a theoretical foundation to develop the new high-speed pantograph.

  • Complex automatic test system design for MIC and RS422 communication gateway

Nowadays multiple bus communication types are comprehensively employed to construct different networks in vehicles information system design. Data interchange among these networks must be conducted through complex communication gateways, which are difficult to test all the features wholly by manual work. MIC and RS422 communication networks are very common in some special vehicles, so in this paper we design a complex automatic test system to implement comprehensive tests for two MIC networks and one RS422 network based on our actual project requirements. The long-time reliability tests (up to 1200 hours) proved that the test system can eventually cover all the functions of the communication gateways, and give exhaustive details about the information flow in our tested system.

  • POSTER: An integrated vector-scalar design on an in-order ARM core

In the low-end mobile processor market, power, energy and area budgets are significantly lower than in other markets (e.g. servers or high-end mobile markets). It has been shown that vector processors are a highly energy- efficient way to increase performance; however adding support for them incurs area and power overheads that would not be acceptable for low-end mobile processors. In this work, we propose an integrated vector-scalar design for the ARM architecture that mostly reuses scalar hardware to support the execution of vector instructions. The key element of the design is our proposed block-based model of execution that groups vector computational instructions together to execute them in a coordinated manner.

  • Optimization-based analysis for residential PV spreading considering non-residential PV allocation in distribution networks

In recent years, photovoltaic (PV) penetration has significantly increased in distribution networks. In the future, it will be more and more important to predict how much and where PV will be installed. Existing agent-based PV diffusion models just considered the spreading of residential PV, but actually there is a large amount of non-residential PV such as industrial and commercial. Its effect should not be ignored. So far agent-based models considering optimization do not exist. In this paper, we incorporate the optimization problem into the agent-based model, and analyze how residential PV diffusion changes depending on the allocation of non-residential PV. As a result, it is shown that PV installation in root sections makes more residential PV diffuse than in end sections.

  • Review of mechanical system design via decentralized control techniques

This paper briefly review the application of decentralized control techniques to the design of passive mechanical systems and the integrated design of active-passive mechanical systems in the past two decades. A design example: Six-DOF TMD for six-DOF isolation is presented to illustrate the design of passive systems using decentralized control techniques achieving optimal H2 performance. After several turns of adjustments online around the designed parameters, a well-tuned system was obtained, in which all the six modes are damped well by a single absorber.

  • Integrated structural design of a L-band multi-beam phased array antenna for satellite

A L-band multiple-beam phased array antenna with integrated structural design for satellite usage is described in this paper. By using the integrated design, the height of the filters and the LNA modules are reduced, and all the radiating elements and modules are assembled on one integral panel. Meanwhile, a solder-less junction structure is developed between the radiating elements and the filters. In this way, it is possible to realize the miniaturization and lightweight of the antenna.

  • Integrated Design of JSCC Scheme Based on Double Protograph LDPC Codes System

In this letter, an integrated design of joint source-channel coding scheme based on the double protograph low-density parity-check (DP-LDPC) codes is proposed. As degree-2 variable nodes (VNs) structure plays an important role in the performance of both water-fall and error-floor regions, the maximum number of degree-2 VNs for DP-LDPC codes is determined from a global perspective. By comparing different allocation schemes for degree-2 VNs, new design principles are proposed. Several DP-LDPC codes with different numbers of degree-2 VNs are proposed. The simulated results reveal the superiority of the optimized DP-LDPC codes, which are in line with the decoding threshold analysis by a joint protograph extrinsic information transfer algorithm.

  • Understanding of outcome-based education (OBE) implementation by civil engineering students in Malaysia

Outcome-based education (OBE) is an approach that focuses on what students should learn (outcomes) and able to apply after the learning process. The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam Campus, Selangor, Malaysia has implemented the OBE approach since 2006. This paper presents the civil engineering students' level of awareness and understanding based on their agreements on the statements related to OBE implementation. Survey questionnaires were distributed to more than 1000 undergraduate students from Year 1 through Year 4. The findings show that majority of the students were aware of the OBE approach and understood its implementation. A good level of understanding on the OBE implementation was observed based on their agreements on the adaptation towards the OBE approach, the independent and lifelong learning, active learning concepts together with the assessment tools/techniques used and advantages gained from the OBE approach. The final students demonstrate a higher level of understanding on OBE implementation compared to the students from the earlier years of study. This indicates that the longer period of study the students were exposed, the better their understanding on the OBE implementation. Even though this study is limited to undergraduate civil engineering students in UiTM Shah Alam, it contributes significantly on the efforts to continually evaluate and monitor OBE implementation to ensure quality and its effectiveness.
