The Implementation of Gated-Viewing System Based on CCD Image Sensor

This paper considers the problem of the implementing gated-viewing devices without the use of an image intensifier which is traditionally used as a fast shutter. A positive effect is achieved by using the structural features of an interline transfer CCD image sensor. The efficiency of the proposed way to control the sensor is confirmed experimentally.

  • Research on video anti-blooming

    Two channels video signal of the same scenery can be obtained by two CCD synchronous video cameras whose integration times are different: one is longer than another. The CCD video camera with short integration time is used for obtaining bright image information while the one with long integration time is used for obtaining gray image information. The image processing method is to adopt DSP combining the subsection linear weight. Then all the processed image information will be input into a video encoder and come to one channel video image with wild dynamic range. The effect of this way is equate to the dynamic range of CCD image sensor was expanded from 80dB to 106dB and finally come to the purpose of video antiblooming.

  • Investigating Artefacts Associated with α Particle Interactions in Charge Coupled Devices

    The response of charge coupled devices (CCDs) to α radiation has been investigated to assess the potential of using these devices to perform α-particle detection and measurement. Previous research indicates that α radiation leaves distinctive patterns in the images produced by CCDs when compared with other types of radiation. In this research, CCD responses to α and β radiation have been compared to highlight these differences. The CCD used was a Sony ICX825AL interline transfer CCD with an 9.98 × 6.71 mm imaging area consisting of 1392 × 1040 pixels, each of size 6.45 × 6.45 μm, covered with a thin aluminised Mylar film to stop exposure to light. Images have been taken of exposures to a 210Po source and horizontal streaks have been observed. It is thought the horizontal streaks are caused by the charge produced by the α particles being read out over several cycles. The average length of the streaks was found to be 14.5 ± 2.0 pixels. Future research will be done to further assess streaks produced by different energy α particles to investigate the potential of using CCDs for spectroscopy, using the MC40 cyclotron at the University of Birmingham.

  • The low distortion all-around view system using fisheye lens for an underwater vehicle

    The visual information is one of very important information to operate underwater vehicles which are operated by human. So most unmanned vehicles and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are equipped with TV cameras. However the angle of view of the general TV camera for underwater becomes very narrow because of the optical refraction caused by the view port and sea water. In particular, human feel narrow about the horizontal angle of view. So we propose the charge coupled device (CCD) image sensor with a fisheye lens, which provides about 180 degrees horizontal angle of view, as the TV camera for underwater vehicles. And a prototype of the low distortion all-around view system using that for the underwater vehicle was made. As the result of experiment in the water tank, good images were appeared by the system.

  • Scaled experimental analysis of singular point generation mechanisms in interferometrie SAR

    This paper investigates the mechanisms of phase singular points (SPs) generation in interferometrie synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) interferogram. We construct a scaled experimental setup to fully control the electromagnetic- wave propagation. It is suggested that a major origin of SPs is the interference among scattered waves rather than additive noise such as thermal noise in electronics.
