A concept of semantics extraction from web data by induction of fuzzy ontologies

IEEE International Conference on Electro-Information Technology , EIT 2013, 2013

Traditionally, ontologies describe knowledge representation in a denotational, formalized, and deductive way. In addition, in this paper, we propose a semiotic, inductive, and approximate approach to ontology creation. We define a conceptual framework, a semantics extraction algorithm, and a first proof of concept applying the algorithm to a small set of Wikipedia documents. Intended as an extension to the prevailing ...

  • AGUIA: Agents Guidance for Intelligence Amplification in Goal Oriented Tasks

All I know is that I know nothing (Socratic Ignorance). The world is an increasingly complex with problems that require swift resolution. Although knowledge is widely available, be it stored in companies' databases or spread over the Internet, humans have intrinsic limitations for handling very large volumes of information or keeping track of frequent updates in a constantly changing world. Moreover, human reasoning is highly intuitive and potentially biased. Decision-making is often based on rules of thumb instead of systematic analysis with full understanding of decisions' context. Computer systems that manage knowledge to thoroughly explore the context and the range of alternatives may improve human decision-making by making people aware of possible misconceptions and biases. Computer systems are also limited in their potential usage due to the frame problem. Systems are not aware of their ignorance, thus they cannot surplus human intelligence, but they may be useful complement to human's intelligence. The objective of this paper is to present the AGUIA model for amplifying human intelligence, based on agent's technology, for task-oriented contexts. AGUIA uses domain ontology and task scripts for handling formal and semiformal knowledge bases, thereby helping to systematically (1) explore the range of alternatives, (2) interpret the problem and the context, and (3) maintain “awareness” of the problem. As for humans, knowledge is a fundamental resource for AGUIA performance. AGUIA's knowledge base keeps updating its content, in the background, during interaction with humans, either through identified individuals or through anonymous mass contribution. The feasibility and benefits of AGUIA were demonstrated in many different fields, such as engineering design, fault diagnosis, accident investigation and online interaction with the government. The experiments considered a set of criteria including: product cost, number of explored alternatives, users' problem understanding and users' awareness of problem context changes. Results indicate AGUIA can actually improve human problem solving capacity in many different areas.

In this paper, we present a quick QuEST overview and a visionary approach using QuEST methods that can improve cognitive V2V network resistance to hacking. QuEST tenets and designs have been used successfully in cyber security, facial recognition, and cancer detection; thus V2V information security in the open internet context can be enhanced via QuEST. Of note, QuEST's focus is on intelligence amplification (IA) versus artificial intelligence (AI) and developing a machine architecture which closes the loop between human and machine.

  • QuEST for information fusion

Qualia-based Exploitation of Sensing Technology (QuEST) is an approach to create a cognitive exoskeleton to improve human-machine decision quality. In this paper, we discuss the motivation of QuEST as it pertains to man-machine information fusion. Operator-based situation awareness includes both elements of external sensory perception and internal cognitive explanation. We outline QuEST elements and tenets towards a reasoning approach that achieves human intelligence amplification (IA) as opposed to data aggregation from machine artificial intelligence (AI). In a use case example for automatic target exploitation, we showcase the need for enhanced understanding of the man (mind-body cognition) and the machine (sensor-based reasoning) for establishing a cohesive narrative of situational activities.

  • A concept of semantics extraction from web data by induction of fuzzy ontologies

Intended as an extension to the prevailing top-down ontologies, we introduce an inductive fuzzy grassroots ontology, which organizes itself organically from existing natural language Web content. Using inductive and approximate reasoning to reflect the natural way in which knowledge is processed, the ontology's bottom-up build process creates emergent semantics learned from the Web. By this means, the ontology acts as a hub for computing with words described in natural language. For Web users, the structural semantics are visualized as inductive fuzzy cognitive maps, allowing an initial form of intelligence amplification. Eventually, we present an implementation of our inductive fuzzy grassroots ontology. Thus, this paper contributes an algorithm for the extraction of fuzzy grassroots ontologies from Web data by inductive fuzzy classification.

  • Exploratory Search: Beyond the Query-Response Paradigm

As information becomes more ubiquitous and the demands that searchers have on search systems grow, there is a need to support search behaviors beyond simple lookup. Information seeking is the process or activity of attempting to obtain information in both human and technological contexts. Exploratory search describes an information-seeking problem context that is open-ended, persistent, and multifaceted, and information-seeking processes that are opportunistic, iterative, and multitactical. Exploratory searchers aim to solve complex problems and develop enhanced mental capacities. Exploratory search systems support this through symbiotic human-machine relationships that provide guidance in exploring unfamiliar information landscapes. Exploratory search has gained prominence in recent years. There is an increased interest from the information retrieval, information science, and human-computer interaction communities in moving beyond the traditional turn-taking interaction model supported by major Web search engines, and toward support for human intelligence amplification and information use. In this lecture, we introduce exploratory search, relate it to relevant extant research, outline the features of exploratory search systems, discuss the evaluation of these systems, and suggest some future directions for supporting exploratory search. Exploratory search is a new frontier in the search domain and is becoming increasingly important in shaping our future world. Table of Contents: Introduction / Defining Exploratory Search / Related Work / Features of Exploratory Search Systems / Evaluation of Exploratory Search Systems / Future Directions and concluding Remarks

  • Should users inhabit visualisations?

The use of three-dimensions for visualisation is a lot newer than the technology required to achieve such visual representations. A further extension of this work is to add multiple users to one visualisation environment to create visualisations that go beyond individual intelligence amplification and become knowledge repositories, shared workspaces and integral parts of the management of the data which they represent. The issues surrounding such uses of visualisations are presented in this paper, with an extension of a three-dimensional visualisation to encompass these ideas.
