What's your number?: Navigating the shifting landscape of ICT carbon footprint labels and standards

2012 IEEE International Symposium on Sustainable Systems and Technology (ISSST), 2012

Firms may have a number of motivations for understanding the carbon footprint of an information and communication technology product. Meeting corporate sustainability targets, complying with emissions reductions mandates, or achieving “green” products rankings are frequent motivators, but, increasingly, eco-label schemes are beginning to pressure early adopters and laggards alike to calculate and understand their product's carbon footprints. However, the rules ...

Green computing a way towards environmentally sustainable future

2014 International Conference on Contemporary Computing and Informatics (IC3I), 2014

The ever increasing growth of technology has drastically increased the amount of `information' that is getting generated and therefore caused an increase in necessary facilities and infrastructure to manage it. This has inevitably increased the energy consumption and demands along with the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) thereby posing a grave threat to the environment. Information computing technologies (ICTs) must ...

  • What's your number?: Navigating the shifting landscape of ICT carbon footprint labels and standards

However, the rules by which carbon footprints are calculated continue to evolve as the understanding of the science behind calculations improves. This document provides an overview of several leading information technology labels and standards, as well as the European Union's efforts to refine and validate the associated measurement methodologies.

  • Green computing a way towards environmentally sustainable future

The ever increasing growth of technology has drastically increased the amount of `information' that is getting generated and therefore caused an increase in necessary facilities and infrastructure to manage it. This has inevitably increased the energy consumption and demands along with the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) thereby posing a grave threat to the environment. Information computing technologies (ICTs) must adopt green computing - principals and strategies which aim at reducing the adverse impact on environment and minimizing the carbon footprint to increase environmental sustainability. Green computing is dealt with multimillion dollar organizations in relation to areas like data center optimization, renewable emery sources, optimization of process and many more. However this topic is overlooked when it comes to medium or small scale organizations or startup companies. And why just the ICT, green computing principles can be extended to others businesses as well. This paper defines the problems in different areas and presents with recent approaches towards overcoming the same. Also it presents a model that can be adopted to implement comprehensive green strategy within small businesses.
