  • Educating students in value-based design and development

    Summary form only given. Much of software engineering is taught and practiced in a value-neutral context, in which every requirement, use case, object, test case, and defect is equally important. Too often, students learn that some of their stakeholders' value considerations are more important than others by failing to consider this on the job and suffering the consequences. The recent book, Value-Based Software Engineering (S. Biffl et al., eds., Springer, 2005) sets out the agenda of the value-based software engineering community. It is to integrate value considerations into traditional software engineering principles and practices for use in software engineers' education and daily work. We have been pursuing this agenda in a research project called "A Value- Based Science of Design", within the NSF Science of Design program. This paper addresses the nature of "value" in a software engineering context; present an initial theory and process for performing value-based software engineering; present example value-based techniques for requirements engineering, design, development, and test; and discuss experiences in incorporating value-based software engineering in individual-assignment and team project courses.

The practical use of the patterns is illustrated by a case study in the field of renewable electricity supply in UK.

In this way, the generalised Nyquist array is reasserted as a viable scheme for the design of robust multivariable control systems.

    Designing cross-organizational e-business applications faces the problem that the collaborating businesses must align their commercial interests without any central decision making authority. The design process must therefore yield a clear view of the commercial value of the collaboration for each economic actor, as well as a clear specification of the activities to be performed by each actor and a specification of information systems to be used by each actor. We present guidelines for designing the value network of the collaboration, which shows the commercial value of the collaboration for each participating actor. We then present guidelines for transforming the value network into process models, which show the feasibility of implementing the value network in the business processes of the actors. Our approach has been developed in different consultancy projects. We illustrate our approach with a consultancy project performed at a company that we will call the Amsterdam Times.

  • Value-Based Design Decision Rationale Documentation: Principles and Empirical Feasibility Study

    The explicit documentation of the rationale of design decisions is a practice generally encouraged, but rarely implemented in industry because of a variety of inhibitors. Methods proposed in the past for design decisions rationale documentation (DDRD) aimed to maximize benefits for the DDRD consumer by imposing on the producer of DDRD the burden to document all the potentially useful information. We propose here a compromise which consists in tailoring DDRD, based on its intended use or purpose. In our view, the adoption of a tailored DDRD, consisting only of the required set of information, would mitigate the effects of DDRD inhibitors. The aim of this paper is twofold: i) to discuss the application of value-based software engineering principles to DDRD, ii) to describe a controlled experiment to empirically analyze the feasibility of the proposed method. Results show that the level of utility related to the same category of DDRD information significantly changes depending on its purpose; such result is novel and it demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed value-based DDRD.

  • Value-Focused System Quality

    To assure the expected operational and developmental system quality is actually delivered, a test-driven approach to architecture elaboration is a powerful tool. Evaluations, simulations, and running code provide direct feedback as to whether a system's architecture and implementation support its quality requirements. Test-driven design is also a fantastic vehicle to check if the specified qualities are sufficient for providing the expected value. Unless you physically experience the system, all its requirements, especially quality aspects, are just assumptions. Thus, you might need to adjust the assumed quality requirements when you see the system in action. The quality/ value feedback loop closes.

  • Normative perspectives on engineering systems design

    This paper proposes a normative decision analytic framework for the design of engineering systems. The approach distinguishes two main types of design enterprises: profit maximizing firms and federal government organizations. For a profit maximizing firm, the approach proposes that the firm should maximize the expected utility of total shareholder return. Within this framework, a fundamental axiom is proposed: that there be no division within an organization that will accept a project that another division within the same organization, and with the same information and resources, would reject. This axiom translates into the necessity of a corporate utility function: divisions within the same organization will operate with the same risk attitude. For a federal government organization (such as NASA), the approach proposes an axiom that relates requirements-based design to value-based design: that there be no design outside the requirements region that is preferred to a design within the requirements region. This axiom leads to the necessity of assigning trade- offs to design requirements and the necessity of a corporate value function. Consequences of these two axioms exhibit the arbitrariness that exists in a variety of widely used systems engineering and requirements-based design approaches.

  • Inside the Organization: Why Privacy and Security Engineering Is a Challenge for Engineers

    Machine ethics is a key challenge in times when digital systems play an increasing role in people’s lives. At the core of machine ethics is the handling of personal data and the security of machine operations. Yet, privacy and security engineering are a challenge in today’s business world where personal data markets, corporate deadlines, and a lack of perfectionism frame the context in which engineers need to work. Besides these organizational and market challenges, each engineer has his or her specific view on the importance of these values that can foster or inhibit taking them into consideration. We present the results of an empirical study of 124 engineers based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and Jonas’ Principle of Responsibility to understand the drivers and impediments of ethical system development as far as privacy and security engineering are concerned. We find that many engineers find the two values important, but do not enjoy working on them. We also find that many struggle with the organizational environment: They face a lack of time and autonomy that is necessary for building ethical systems, even at this basic level. Organizations’ privacy and security norms are often too weak or even oppose value-based design, putting engineers in conflict with their organizations. Our data indicate that it is largely engineers’ individually perceived responsibility as well as a few character traits that make a positive difference to ethical system development.

  • Properties of the Utility of Verification

    Verification is an essential aspect of systems engineering. Verification activities provide evidence that the system under development does what it was anticipated to do. In acquisition programs, verification activities provide evidence of contractual fulfilment. In fact, a major financial portion of system development is spent towards designing and executing a verification strategy. However, the design of verification strategies in current practice is often prescribed by standards and driven by good practices and gut feeling. Quantitative approaches to design verification strategies could yield significant improvement to their effectiveness and coverage. Understanding how verification contributes to a system's expected utility is necessary to enable such transformation. This paper presents four key properties of the utility of verification: the meaning of verification from an epistemological standpoint; the representation of verification within a mathematical framework of system development; the coupled nature of the value of verification activities; and the impossibility of objectively valuing verification.
