In current years, application layer overlay networks have become a popular solution for video streaming delivering. Ad Hoc networks are composed of mobile nodes without any fundamental structure, these mobile nodes dynamically construct temporary network to communicate with each other. So, the irrelevant fundamental structure feature of overlay network is suitable for Ad Hoc networks. However, Ad Hoc networks exists several fundamental problems, including large dynamic of nodes and links, the unstable bandwidth between nodes, high transferring delay and limited energy. In this paper, we propose a Cluster-to-Cluster overlay network (C2C), which clusters the nodes into some clusters with a weight degree-based clustering algorithm, considering the forwarding and transmitting ability, energy of the node and the distance between nodes, the clusters are constructed into multi-link mesh-based structure, and in the cluster, the nodes are organized with probe forwarding mesh-based algorithm. The simulation results demonstrate the C2C overlay network can achieve less delay and transmitting cost than tree-based, mesh- based and hybrid based overlay networks in high unstable Ad Hoc networks.
Live video streaming is very helpful for many incidents. For example, it can be very helpful to make an announcement in an area, which is effected by natural disaster. So it is also very essential to deliver the live video stream without any time delay if achievable. The live video data is streaming commonly in a tree-based overlay network or in a mesh-based overlay network. In case of departure of a peer with additional upload bandwidth, the overlay network becomes very vulnerable to churn. In this paper, a two dimensional array-based overlay network is proposed for streaming the live video stream data. As there is always a peer or a live video streaming server to upload the live video stream data, so the overlay network is very stable and very robust to churn. Peers are placed according to their upload and download bandwidth, which improves the balance of load and performance. The overlay network uses the additional upload bandwidth of peers to minimize chunk delivery delay and to maximize balance of load. The procedure, which is used for distributing the additional upload bandwidth of the peers, distributes the additional upload bandwidth to the heterogeneous strength peers in a fair treat distribution approach and to the homogeneous strength peers in a uniform distribution approach. The proposed overlay network has been simulated by Qual Net from Scalable Network Technologies and results are presented in this paper. Both maximum delay and average delay has decreased compared to Fast-Mesh overlay network. The percentage change in both of maximum and average delay time are below 30%, even though the number of nodes increases 10 times.

In our proposed network, by P2P network topology matching method and limited use of resource classification, the resource classification maintenance and search costs in the classical semantic overlay network can be greatly reduced, and thus the network performance can be improved.

Because of its advantages, more and more applications are emerged on overlay network. To suit a overlay network dynamically, knowledge about network characteristics(i.e. quality of service(QoS)) is necessary for overlay network applications. Overlay network applications can use the characteristics to recover from path outages and periods of degraded performance of overlay network. However, the measurement of such characteristics is often a burden on the overlay network applications because it is not their intended purpose. So as one solution to this problem, this paper presents a service-oriented QoS measurement framework through the introduction of multi-agent technology. The framework is distributed, scalable and cooperative, and it can provide a independent service for overlay network applications that measures the QoS parameters.
Aimed at the low search efficiency of manufacture resource on the traditional unstructured super-peer overlay network, a new optimization method of overlay network is presented for improving its performance in this paper. Firstly, a hierarchy tree of manufacture resource is build, and then the resource is identified according to the tree. The peer's identification is calculated from all manufacturing resource identification stored in the peer. Then, the resource and the overlay are related according to their identification. Finally, all peers are clustered to form an interest community using the peer interest distance. The search request is restricted in the interest community. Experiment result shows that the scheme improves about 20 percent efficiency of resource query in compared with the before.
For routing and lookup efficiency, DHT-based overlay network has been developed. The representative DHT-based overlay networks are Kad, Chord, Pastry and CAN. And Several applications such as file sharing, distributed storage system have been developed on the DHT-baed overlay network. But there exist several security attacks on the DHT-based overlay network: Peer ID attack, Attacks on message routing, Rapid join/leave attack, DoS attack and so on. In this paper, we propose secure routing mechanism against message routing attacks for DHT-based overlay network. The proposed mechanism ensures that when a normal peer sends a lookup messages using a key, the messages delivered to the peer which is owner of the key with very high probability.
A Mobile Ad hoc NETwork(MANET) is a wireless network that consists of mobile nodes without the aid of base stations. However, in case that the node density is low, the connectivity between nodes become lower and many data packets cannot be forwarded in the MANET. In this paper, we propose the scheme to configure a MANET based on autonomous clustering and P2P overlay network to enhance the connectivity in the MANET. In the proposed scheme, it is assumed that all nodes have wireless devices both to communicate with neighboring nodes such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and to access to the wireless infrastructure such as 3G and LTE. The autonomous clustering dynamically divides a MANET into multiple sub networks called clusters and elects a cluster head in each cluster. The cluster head communicates with the other cluster heads through the P2P overlay network that is constituted based on the wireless infrastructure such as 3G and WiMAX. In the proposed scheme, cluster heads periodically exchanges control packets with each other to configure and maintain the P2P overlay network. From the simulation results, we can confirm that the proposed scheme could achieve high connectivity between nodes in the MANET owing to the P2P overlay network and the autonomous clustering.
Content-Centric Network (CCN) sends data to avoid duplicated transmission with content name in the network. However, CCN may cause increase in overhead while maintaining contents management table and create storage problem while storing contents information in the node. In this paper, we proposed a new searching scheme using interesting keyword and manage contents table via overlay network. The content providers with high frequency are chosen in the network. Then an overlay network is constructed using content providers. Via overlay network, it is possible to reduce the number of message transmissions and overhead to manage content management table in the network.
Recent years have witnessed the great development of overlay network, particularly for the application of code stream transmission through multi- path P2P overlay network. However, the selection method of multicast paths is always impeding its efficiency. Aiming at this issue, the paper proposes a new Optimal Reference Path selection method, based on the algorithm calculation. In this paper, we firstly prove the premises assumption (e.g., network paths correlation) and correctness of Optimal Reference Path model, then we illustrate the model and conduct algorithm simulation. Simulation results show that the selection method obtains better performance in packet loss rate and network transmission width. In terms of network topology efficiency, the algorithm can also achieve good results. Thus, the Optimal Reference Path selection method can serve as an efficient algorithm which could be used in path-dependent P2P overlay network.
The virtual computing environments integrated with virtual machines (VMs) and virtual overlay networks play an important role in distributed computing and cloud computing. Overlay network with a layer 2 abstraction provides a powerful model for virtualized wide-area distributed computing resources on collections of virtual machines (VMs). However, the performance of existing virtual overlay network can not support the high-performance distributed computing. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a virtual overlay network system that has negligible latency and bandwidth in LAN networks. Our system, VON/KVM, is integrated with KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), an open-sourced virtual machine monitor (VMM). VON/KVM achieves native performance and negligible overheads on 1 Gbps Ethernet networks.
