  • Real Time Collaborative Video Annotation Using Google App Engine and XMPP Protocol

    This WIP paper reports the status of a Windows based tool, 'Event Coding and Visualization of Data' (ECOVRD) that allows real time collaborative video annotation using Google App Engine (GAE) and XMPP protocol. ECOVRD facilitates classification of live or video recorded individual and team behavior. It is designed with the dual purpose of advancing behavioral (observational) research and of supporting applied uses such as performance assessment and feedback during professional coaching. Users of ECOVRD can initiate a shared real-time video annotation with their social network (Google Buzz) via XMPP protocol. The custom-built publish/subscribe architecture wrapped around GAE's channel service, pushes data from the cloud to subscribed clients resulting in real-time collaborative experience. ECORVD may be the first to successfully leverage the server push framework of GAE for desktop based video annotation applications.

  • Introduction to XMPP protocol and developing online collaboration applications using open source software and libraries

    Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open, XML-based protocol aimed at near-real-time, extensible instant messaging (IM) and presence information. It has been expanded into the broader realm of message- oriented middleware. Built to be extensible, the protocol has been extended with features such as Voice over IP and file transfer signaling. XMPP protocol has been used by many social networking platforms including gtalk, and facebook; collaborative services like google wave, and gradient; geo-presence systems like Nokia Ovi Contacts; multiplayer games like chesspark, and by many online live customer support and technical support services. In this manuscript, I will introduce XMPP and its extensions. In the tutorials I will demonstrate how you can leverage some of the available open source software and libraries for rapid development of XMPP enabled services and communication platforms.   • Instant Notification System in Heterogeneous Sensor Network with Deployment of XMPP Protocol

    There is a need of continuous monitoring of vital parameters of patient at critical situation. The current scenario in hospital has a digital display for such parameters which is observed by nurse. For such monitoring a dedicated person(nurse) is required. But looking at the growing population this ratio of one nurse per patient would be a considerable probable in future. So manually monitoring the patient should be replaced by some other method. Online monitoring has attracted considerable attraction for many years. It includes the applications which are not only limited up to industrial process monitoring and control but has been extended up to civilian application areas like healthcare application, home automation, traffic control etc. This paper discusses the feasibility of Instant Notification System in Heterogeneous Sensor Network with Deployment of XMPP Protocol for medical application. The system aims to provide an environment which enables medical practitioners to distantly monitor various vital parameters of patients. For academic purpose we have limited this system for use of monitoring patients' body temperature and blood pressure. The proposed system collects data from various heterogeneous sensor networks - for example: patients' body temperature, and blood pressure - converts it to a standard packet and provides the facility to send it over a network using Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP)-(in more common terms Instant Messaging (IM)). Use of heterogeneous sensor networks (HSN) provides the much required platform independence, while XMPP enables the instant notification.

  • Proposal of a collaborative software development platform for the virtual universities: The Virtual University of the Senegal (UVS) experience

    This paper presents a collaborative software development platform allowing traditional and virtual universities actors who are geographically distant to work on a software development project using common (usual) programming languages. In the context of the virtual universities operating in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), pratical classes are needed to acquire and to enhance the necessary skills particularly in software engineering. To the various actors of these digital and traditional universities making some e-learning, this paper supplies a preconfigured collaborative software development environment including synchronization of files belonging to a given project, instant messaging, audio and video. Our platform has an administration interface allowing the management of permissions and preconfigured virtual machines allocation to the various actors. To reach our goals, we used the XMPP protocol for instant messaging and file synchronization. Then, we used WebRTC for audio and video between actors. Finally, we used the RDP protocol to allow the access to the virtual machines. In this work, we show how our platform was used by the Virtual University of the Senegal (UVS) teachers and students in the field of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science for some pratical classes about C/C++, Java, Python and PHP programming languages.

  • Design and Implementation of Interactive English Grammar Learning System Based on Android Platform

    In accordance with the model of mobile learning based on Android platform, from three aspects of the server, the network environment and the client, we investigate the server deployment design, communication protocol selection, voice recording and playback and other issues. Then interactive English grammar learning system is established. In the system implementation phase, the data transmission based on HTTP protocol and Tomcat Web server is realized. The text message exchange and voice chat based on Openfire instant communication server and XMPP protocol are designed and implemented. By running test, results showed that the system could basically meet the needs of users in the environment of mobile Internet. It enrich the means of English teaching and the information of English grammar teaching.

  • Development of an Integrated Solution for Intrusion Detection: A Model Based on Data Correlation

    This work describes a solution for intrusion detection that presents an improved operational efficacy - both in terms of performance as well as volume of processed data - reducing at the same time the number of false negative and false positive results. For that purpose we correlate the data collected by the intrusion detection system with other data sources, such as events that are reported by interfacing equipment (edge devices) as well as other agents considered crucial for this purpose such as vulnerability detection solutions.   • Research and implementation of network collaborative transmission model in mobile GIS

    Due to most Mobile GIS adopts request-response pattern to communicate between server and mobile terminals, and that mobile terminals are isolated from one another, so it leads to be lack of collaboration and data sharing capabilities among mobile terminals in Mobile GIS. In view of this, a network collaborative transmission model which combines central server with P2P (Peer to Peer) network is proposed. In the end, using open source C++ libjingle library, ACE (ADAPTIVE Communication Environment) framework and so on, a new Mobile GIS system based on Jabber/XMPP protocol which is applied to the network collaborative transmission model for collaborative work is implemented and the problem of establishing a P2P connection through NAT (Network Address Translators) is resolved by applying the ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) mechanism in this paper. In addition, the new Mobile GIS system has been applied for land verification in Tianjin city, China. Research demonstrates that implementation of the network collaborative transmission model proposed in this paper can improve cooperativity in Mobile GIS.
