  • A secure query method for EPCGlobal networks

    EPCGlobal network is an RFID-enabled supply chain network which provides automatic data sharing for supply chain partners. EPCGlobal network improves the visibility of supply chains, but also magnifies the security and privacy concerns. There is a common view that there should be different visibility for different roles in EPCGlobal networks. Therefore, A secure query method should be proposed to enhance the security of EPCGlobal networks. In this paper, based on the formal model of EPCGlobal network, we propose a set of innovative framework of role-based access control policies to enhance the security of EPCGlobal networks. We implement a secure query method by using approach of “user-permission assignment during query”. The soundness and completeness properties are given for our secure query method.

  • Discovery Architecture for the Tracing of Products in the EPCglobal Network

    The EPCglobal Network is a network providing a shared view of the disposition of EPC-bearing objects between EPCglobal subscribers, within a relevant business context. In the EPCglobal Network, product data is distributed to several EPCISes(EPC Information Services) via movement of the product. The ONS (Object Naming Service) and the EPCISDS (EPCIS Discovery Service) are used to identify the distributed data for tracing the product. However, there is neither a standard scenario for access to the services when tracing the product nor a defined standard for EPCISDS. This paper suggests a novel architecture for tracing product data with EPCISDS and ONS. Our architecture provides a concrete substructure for product tracing services.

  • A Fast Anticollision Algorithm for the EPCglobal UHF Class-1 Generation-2 RFID Standard

    In this letter, a fast anticollision algorithm has been proposed to improve the read performance of the EPCglobal UHF Class-1 Generation-2 protocol. Our algorithm is based on the early adjustment of frame length. To reduce the computation complexity of interrogators, the proposed algorithm resorts to only one examination of current frame length in each read round. As compared with the case of examining at every time slot, the proposed method can dramatically reduce the number of examinations from about 1425 to 14. The normalized throughput of our method can reach a value of up to 35%, which is very close to the theoretical maximum of 36% for the EPCglobal UHF Class-1 Generation-2 anticollision scheme.

  • Radio Transmission Performance of EPCglobal Gen-2 RFID System

    In this paper, we analyze the performance of the encoding and the modulation processes in the downlink and uplink of the EPCglobal Gen2 system through the analysis and simulation. Furthermore, the synchronization issues on time and frequency domain and the preamble architecture are evaluated. Through the simulation in the uplink, we find that the detection probability of FM0 and Miller coding approaches 1 at 13 dB E<sub>b</sub>/N<sub>0</sub>.

Passive RFID relies on RF energy transferred from the reader to the tag to power the tag, so they can be read at short distances. This limits the usage of tag for certain applications. On the other hand, active RFID that has a battery increase the read range and reliability, it is promising for supply chain management and logistics. In 2007, EPCglobal that is the global RFID standards organization announced to experiment with active and passive RFIDs attached to pallet and items from Shanghai to Long beach by air. We implemented new active RFIDs for this trial experiment. Our new active RFID has an LF (Low Frequency) module, HF (High Frequency) module, UHF (Ultra High Frequency) module, sensors, and a logger that is installed in an actual pallet for air transportation with the function to be activated and/or be slept by HF Reader. The results of the pilot confirmed that our new active RFID has the enough functions for air transportation and logistics service with low power consumption.

  • A New RFID Anti-collision Algorithm for the EPCglobal UHF Class-1 Generation-2 Standard

    This paper provides a scheme to improve the read efficiency of anti-collision algorithm for the EPCglobal UHF Class-1 Generation-2 RFID standard. In this standard, dynamic frame slotted ALOHA is specified to solve the anti-collision problem. Also, the Q-algorithm with a key parameter C is adopted to dynamically adjust the frame sizes. In the paper, we propose a new method, named early frame length adjustment, to adaptively adjust the Q-value to increase the read speed. Our method can achieve the read speed of up to 400 tags per second and reach the read throughput close to the theoretical value. The results indicate our method outperforms the original Q-algorithm. The read performance can be suitable for reading objects in logistics management.

  • Extending EPCglobal ALE middleware to integrate transducer capability of IEEE 1451 standards

    Many architectures and enabling technologies of Internet of Things (IoT) are discussed in recent years. As the IoT is constantly progressing, RFID tags and transducer technologies are developed continuously. EPCglobal releases a collection of standard specifications utilizing RFID technology to support applications such as supply chain management. IEEE 1451 is a set of transducer standards defining data exchange format and communication protocols. In this paper, we place the emphasis on adding transducer capability of IEEE 1451 to EPCglobal Application Level Events (ALE) middleware in EPCglobal architecture framework. The extension mechanism and transducer cycle specification are introduced to extend ALE capability to collect sensor data and process actuator actions. The extended EPCglobal ALE middleware can handle the raw data not only the RFID tags gathered from readers but also transducers. After integrating this mechanism to original identify and exchange layers of EPCglobal architecture framework, an IoT architecture based on international standards will provide more versatile applications and applied to our daily lives.

  • A Modified Slotted Random Anti-collision Algorithm for the EPCglobal UHF Class-1 Generation-2 Standard

    This paper proposes a modified slotted random anti-collision algorithm to improve the read efficiency of anti-collision algorithm for the EPC global UHF Class-1 Generation-2 RFID standard. In this standard, the slotted random anti- collision algorithm which is a dynamic frame slotted ALOHA algorithm is specified to solve this problem. Also, the Q-algorithm with a key parameter C is adopted to dynamically adjust the frame sizes. In this paper, we reduce the total number of frames in the recognition process to reduce the total time by calculating the optimal Q value and setting the lowest reasonable throughput. In the simulation, our method outperforms the original slotted random anti- collision algorithm by reducing total time about 30%.

  • A fast and stable anti-collision algorithm for the EPCglobal UHF Class 1 Generation 2 standard

    The EPC C1 Gen2 (Electronic Product Code Class 1 Generation 2) standard uses the traditional Q-algorithm to solve the tag anti-collision problem. The interrogator needs to frequently send QueryAdjust command to adjust the frame length when multiple tags or no tags synchronously response to the interrogator in a time slot, so that the system will consume a lot of energy, and the system throughput is also very low. According to these deficiencies, this paper proposes a fast and stable algorithm, named FSQ algorithm, by dynamically adjusting Q value to lower the frequency of interrogator sending QueryAdjust command, and through optimizing the time slots, the simulation results indicate FSQ algorithm outperforms the traditional Q-algorithm and the system power consumption has been got greatly lowered.

  • Integrating Transducer Capability to GS1 EPCglobal Identify Layer for IoT Applications

    Internet of Things (IoTs) is a technology to connect machines, objects, and people with electronic devices. Many researchers have focused their works on architecture design from different perspectives. The deployment of IoT applications contains a variety of things that are attached with end-point devices, such as sensors, actuators, and radio frequency identification tags to perform sensing, controlling, and/or identifying things. The GS1 EPCglobal Architecture and IEEE 1451 standards are adopted as the cornerstone of our IoT architecture framework. In this paper, we focus on how to resolve the heterogeneity and dynamic characteristics of this variety of things. A uniform expression mechanism based on electronic product coding (EPC) scheme is introduced. The practical facilities are presented and examples of how to generate EPC scheme for transducers are illustrated. By integrating the IEEE 1451 compatible transducers, based on transducer electronic data sheet, to the identify layer of the extended GS1 EPCglobal Architecture, we can process more versatile data of different things in IoT applications. The uniform EPC scheme of heterogeneous things in the identify layer will make a consistent expression of things and compatible with the upper layer. This mechanism plays a fundamental role to support transducer capability in GS1 EPCglobal Architecture.
