What Are IEEE Products?

IEEE products are the tangible offerings IEEE makes available to members, institutions, and industry. These products are distinct from IEEE services in that they are discrete deliverables: a database subscription, a standards document, a set of conference proceedings, or an e-learning course. IEEE generates revenue through these products, which in turn supports the organization's broader mission of advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The product portfolio spans digital content, technical standards, and educational materials.

IEEE Xplore Digital Library

IEEE Xplore is IEEE's flagship content product. It is a digital library providing access to more than five million documents, including peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, technical standards, and IEEE-published books and ebooks. Institutions access IEEE Xplore through subscription agreements, while individual members receive limited complimentary access as part of their membership. IEEE Xplore is organized by topic, society, and publication type, making it a primary research resource for engineers, scientists, and students. Its search and citation tools are regularly updated to reflect current practices in academic research infrastructure.

IEEE Standards

IEEE standards are formal technical documents that specify requirements, methods, or definitions for use across industries. Published through IEEE Standards Association, they are sold as individual documents or through subscription bundles. The IEEE 802 family governs wired and wireless local area networks and is among the most widely implemented set of standards in the world, underpinning Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth protocols. The IEEE 754 standard for floating-point arithmetic is foundational to modern computing hardware. Other well-known standards address power systems, medical devices, software engineering, and electromagnetic compatibility. Standards represent both a product revenue stream and a public benefit, as they enable interoperability across industry.

Conference Proceedings

IEEE is one of the world's largest producers of engineering conference proceedings. Thousands of IEEE-sponsored conferences take place each year, and the resulting papers are indexed and made available through IEEE Xplore. Conference proceedings are a significant product category in engineering fields where conferences serve as the primary venue for sharing new results, particularly in computing and signal processing. Authors submitting to IEEE conferences assign copyright to IEEE, and the papers become part of the Xplore product catalog, accessible to subscribers.

Educational Courses and Certification Programs

IEEE offers a portfolio of continuing education courses through IEEE Learning Network and other platforms. These courses cover technical subjects aligned with IEEE's areas of interest, as well as professional skills such as project management and technical writing. Some programs lead to certificates that members can use to demonstrate competency in specific areas. This educational product line supports IEEE's mission of advancing the profession by helping engineers update their skills throughout their careers.

IEEE TryEngineering and Pre-Professional Products

IEEE also produces educational resources targeted at younger audiences. IEEE TryEngineering provides materials for teachers and students at the K-12 level, introducing concepts in engineering and technology. These pre-professional products support the pipeline of future engineers and align with IEEE's interest in promoting STEM education broadly.

Applications

  • Research access: IEEE Xplore provides institutions and individual researchers with access to the primary technical literature in electrical engineering and related fields.
  • Industry standards compliance: Companies use IEEE standards documents to ensure their products and systems meet technical requirements for interoperability and safety.
  • Conference knowledge dissemination: Proceedings products make the results presented at IEEE conferences available to the global technical community.
  • Continuing professional development: Educational courses and certificates allow engineers to maintain competency and demonstrate skills to employers.
  • Pre-college outreach: K-12 educational materials introduce students to engineering concepts and encourage pursuit of technical careers.
  • Library collections: University and corporate libraries purchase IEEE product subscriptions to support the research and development work of their communities.
