IEEE catalog
What Is the IEEE Catalog?
The IEEE catalog is the official listing of publications, standards, and technical products produced by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and made available to its members, subscribers, and the broader engineering community. It encompasses the full range of IEEE's publishing output: peer-reviewed journals and transactions, magazines, conference proceedings, technical standards, books, and e-learning materials. The catalog functions as both a discovery tool and an access gateway, allowing engineers, researchers, and educators to identify and retrieve technical content across the many fields IEEE covers.
IEEE publishes nearly a third of the world's technical literature in electrical engineering, computing, and electronics. Managing and presenting that output in a structured, searchable way is the purpose of the catalog system, which is implemented primarily through the IEEE Xplore digital library.
Journals, Transactions, and Magazines
The largest portion of the IEEE catalog consists of periodicals: peer-reviewed journals and transactions published by IEEE's 46 technical societies and councils, along with practitioner-focused magazines. More than 200 active periodicals appear in the catalog, covering fields ranging from aerospace systems to biomedical engineering to signal processing. IEEE Xplore provides a title-browsable directory of all periodicals, each with publication metadata, scope statements, and access information. The catalog also distinguishes between subscription-based titles and those published under open-access terms, with IEEE's All-Society Periodicals Package (ASPP) offering bundled access to over 200 journals through institutional subscriptions, as described on the IEEE ASPP information page.
Standards and Conference Proceedings
IEEE standards form a substantial segment of the catalog. The IEEE Standards Association publishes standards across dozens of technology domains, from power systems (IEEE 1547) to wireless networking (IEEE 802.11) to software engineering (IEEE 730). All active and archived standards are browsable through IEEE Xplore's standards collection, which also includes draft standards under development. Conference proceedings make up another major component: IEEE sponsors thousands of technical conferences each year, and the resulting proceedings are archived in the catalog alongside journal content. This makes IEEE Xplore the single largest repository of engineering conference papers in the world.
Books and Educational Materials
The IEEE catalog extends beyond periodicals and standards to include IEEE-published books, co-publications with John Wiley & Sons, and e-learning modules. Technical books in the catalog address foundational engineering topics as well as applied professional development subjects. IEEE also produces the IEEE Reference Guide and other publication operations documents that support authors submitting to any catalog title. The catalog's membership product section lists professional development resources, including certifications and online training available exclusively to IEEE members.
Applications
The IEEE catalog supports a range of professional and academic activities, including:
- Literature searches for research papers and technical surveys
- Standards compliance and engineering design reference
- Curriculum development for electrical and computer engineering programs
- Institutional library subscriptions and collection management
- Technology tracking across emerging and established engineering fields
