What Is the Vehicular Technology Society?
The Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is a technical society within IEEE dedicated to advancing engineering and technology in the areas of wireless communications, land transportation, and motor vehicles. It is one of the oldest continuing technical societies in IEEE, tracing its origins to the late 1940s when mobile radio communications for vehicles was an emerging discipline. Today the Society serves more than 11,000 members worldwide, drawn from academia, industry, and government, and provides forums for sharing research across a range of technologies relevant to vehicles and mobility.
VTS activities are concentrated around three interrelated pillars: wireless communications as applied to vehicular and mobile contexts, the engineering of land transportation systems, and the technical development of motor vehicles including propulsion, electronics, and control. This scope has expanded considerably from the Society's early focus on radio communications and now encompasses connected vehicles, electric powertrains, and intelligent transportation infrastructure.
History and Founding
The Professional Group on Vehicular Communications (PGVC) was founded in Detroit in 1949, initially oriented toward radio communications for law enforcement and emergency services. Over subsequent decades the group evolved through several name changes as its technical scope broadened. It became the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society in 1978, reflecting a wider mandate that encompassed communications, propulsion, and the full range of vehicular engineering. The growth of cellular radio from its commercial launch in the early 1980s significantly expanded the Society's membership and research output. Technical Focus Areas
VTS organizes its technical activities through conferences, standards participation, and journal publication. The Society covers core topics including wireless channel modeling for vehicular environments, multiple-access schemes for mobile networks, electric vehicle power electronics, battery management systems, and the integration of communication and sensing in intelligent transportation systems.
The Society hosts the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC), which is held twice annually and is one of the largest IEEE-sponsored engineering conferences in communications and transportation. The Society publishes the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, a peer-reviewed journal that covers a broad range of topics from radio propagation and antenna design to power systems and autonomous driving. The IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology has been published continuously since 1952 and is one of the most-cited IEEE journals in its domain.
