What Is Terminology?
Terminology is the systematic study and management of the words, phrases, and symbols used to designate concepts within a specialized domain of knowledge. A terminology is also the collection of such designations itself: the set of terms that practitioners of a field use to communicate with precision. Engineering and science disciplines depend heavily on controlled terminology because ambiguity in technical language leads directly to errors in design, measurement, specification, and safety-critical communication. The field draws on linguistics, cognitive science, and information science to analyze how terms are formed, how they acquire meaning within a community, and how they can be standardized and maintained across languages and organizations.
Terminology work is distinct from general lexicography. A dictionary records how words are used across the full range of a language; a terminology record establishes how a specific concept should be named in a given field, usually with a definition formulated to be unambiguous within that field's scope. The International Organization for Standardization coordinates much of this activity at the international level through its committees on vocabulary and terminology principles.
Standardized Vocabulary in Engineering
Technical standards frequently include normative terminology sections that define exactly what each key term means for the purposes of that standard. Without this, two parties implementing the same specification might interpret critical terms differently, producing interoperability failures. The IEEE and ISO jointly maintain a vocabulary standard for systems and software engineering, ISO/IEC/IEEE 24765, which collects and standardizes terminology applicable to all systems and software engineering work. The 2017 revision of this standard consolidated definitions from prior IEEE and ISO vocabulary documents into a single reference, covering several thousand terms. Earlier work in this tradition includes the IEEE Std 610.12 Standard Glossary of Software Engineering Terminology, which defined more than 1,000 terms for the software engineering community and served as a foundational vocabulary document from 1990 onward.
Terminology in Standards Development
Every technical standards body operates a terminology committee or working group responsible for harmonizing definitions within its domain. The ISO maintains a central glossary of terms used in standardization itself, including concepts such as "standard," "normative," and "informative," ensuring that documents published across different ISO technical committees use these foundational terms consistently. The National Institute of Standards and Technology published an early glossary of standards-related terminology that addressed the vocabulary of metrology, conformance assessment, and accreditation. Terminology management in standards work involves definition drafting, tracking the lineage of terms across document revisions, managing translations for international publication, and resolving conflicts when two standards in different domains use the same term with different meanings.
Computational Terminology Management
Modern terminology work relies on structured data formats and software tools to manage large inventories of terms across multiple languages and versions. The TermBase eXchange (TBX) format, standardized under ISO 30042, defines an XML-based schema for exchanging terminological data between translation memory systems, content management systems, and standards databases. Terminology extraction from technical corpora uses natural language processing techniques to identify candidate terms automatically from large bodies of text, reducing the manual effort required to populate terminology databases. The resulting structured records contain the preferred term, its definition, synonyms, deprecated terms, related concepts, subject area tags, and source references, forming a knowledge graph that supports both human lookup and machine-readable processing.
