Student awards

What Are Student Awards?

Student awards, within the IEEE context, are formal recognition programs that honor undergraduate and graduate students, student volunteers, and student branches for academic achievement, research contributions, technical project excellence, and service to the engineering community. These programs operate across multiple layers of the IEEE organizational hierarchy: some are administered centrally by IEEE's Student Activities Committee (SAC) and the IEEE Foundation, while others are managed by individual IEEE technical societies recognizing excellence specific to their fields. Together, the programs represent IEEE's systematic effort to identify and acknowledge exceptional students at an early stage in their professional development.

The range of student awards within IEEE is broad, spanning scholarships that provide financial support for academic study, competition prizes that recognize technical skill, activity awards that honor volunteer contributions, and honor society recognition for academic standing. The IEEE Foundation's student and young professional grants page serves as a central directory for many of the scholarship and fellowship opportunities available to IEEE student members.

Student Activities Awards

The IEEE Student Activities Committee administers several awards that recognize outstanding volunteer service and branch performance. The Larry K. Wilson Regional Student Activities Award is presented annually in each IEEE geographic region to the student member whose contributions to student activities have been most significant. The Darrel Chong Student Activity Award recognizes branches and projects based on the quality and educational impact of specific activities, not merely the quantity of events organized. The IEEE Regional Exemplary Student Branch Award honors branches that demonstrate operations consistent with IEEE's goals and exhibit sound organizational management. These awards are submitted through the Student Awards Portal, with nominations evaluated by the SAC, as detailed on the SAC Awards Programs page.

Scholarship and Fellowship Programs

IEEE and the IEEE Foundation administer scholarships and fellowships that provide direct financial support for student academic pursuits. The IEEE Charles LeGeyt Fortescue Graduate Scholarship supports graduate study in electrical engineering and is among the oldest IEEE student financial awards. IEEE technical societies operate their own scholarship programs targeting students in their respective specialties: the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society, for example, offers annual undergraduate and graduate scholarships of $10,000 each to students in electrical and systems engineering. These programs collectively address financial barriers to graduate education and reward academic merit in technical fields aligned with IEEE's scope.

Society and Honor Society Recognition

Individual IEEE technical societies recognize students working in their specific fields through paper awards, travel grants, and best presentation prizes at IEEE conferences. Many IEEE society conferences designate a Best Student Paper Award to recognize original research submitted by graduate students, providing both financial recognition and visibility within the professional community. IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the Honor Society of IEEE, inducts students who rank among the top fifth of their class in electrical and computer engineering programs, and subsequently recognizes outstanding achievement through its own award programs. The IEEE Educational Activities Board awards page lists recognition programs spanning pre-university education through graduate-level work.

Applications

Student awards have significance across a range of educational and professional contexts, including:

  • Financial support for undergraduate and graduate engineering education
  • Academic recognition that strengthens fellowship and employment applications
  • Incentives for high-quality volunteer engagement in IEEE student branches
  • Early career visibility for students presenting research at IEEE technical conferences
  • Retention and growth of IEEE membership by connecting students to the organization's recognition infrastructure
