Region news

What Is Region News?

Region news refers to the communications, announcements, and reports that IEEE's ten geographic regions produce to keep their members informed about local activities, governance decisions, technical events, and organizational developments. Each IEEE region generates news content through its own websites, newsletters, and digital channels, complemented by centralized reporting through IEEE Member and Geographic Activities and the broader IEEE publication network. This distributed communications model reflects the regional structure of IEEE itself: while global policy is set at the organizational level, most day-to-day information relevant to members is produced and distributed at the regional and section level.

Region news serves as the primary mechanism by which engineers and students within a given territory learn about upcoming conferences, calls for nominations for regional awards, changes in governance, and new programs or initiatives available to section and chapter members. The volume and format of regional news vary considerably depending on a region's size, resources, and membership concentration.

Regional Communications Channels

Each IEEE region maintains its own website and, in most cases, a newsletter or electronic bulletin distributed to members at regular intervals. The IEEE Member and Geographic Activities news feed aggregates items from across the regional structure, including MGA board updates, calls for volunteers, financial reports, and highlights from regional conferences and competitions. The MGA Scoop, a regular newsletter, covers operational developments across all ten regions and serves as a coordination layer between the regional tier and IEEE's central governance.

Individual regions also produce their own publications. IEEE Region 9, which covers Latin America, publishes the Links magazine, the Electrolatina bulletin, and IEEE Latin American Transactions. IEEE Canada (Region 7) publishes the IEEE Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a member magazine. These publications blend technical content with organizational news, keeping members connected to both the professional mission of IEEE and the practical activities of their local section.

IEEE Spectrum and Global News Context

IEEE's flagship member magazine, IEEE Spectrum, covers technology news with global scope but regularly features stories about regional IEEE activities, changes in geographic organization, and profiles of engineering communities around the world. Region-specific stories, such as updates on IEEE's ongoing geographic realignment or coverage of major regional conferences, appear in Spectrum and are distributed to members alongside purely technical content.

Section newsletters and chapter bulletins extend regional news to the local level, covering meeting announcements, award recipients, leadership transitions, and member spotlights. Student branch publications, produced by members at universities within each region, add another layer of community-oriented communication that is specifically focused on the interests of student members and recent graduates.

Applications

Region news supports IEEE's professional community through a range of communication functions, including:

  • Announcing regional and section-level technical conferences, workshops, and networking events
  • Reporting on IEEE governance decisions, regional elections, and volunteer opportunities
  • Highlighting member achievements, awards, and professional milestones
  • Distributing calls for papers, standards participation opportunities, and grant applications
  • Connecting student branches and chapters with regional resources and training programs
