Region 6
What Is Region 6?
Region 6 is the IEEE geographic unit covering the Western United States, encompassing the states from Alaska and Hawaii in the north and west to New Mexico and Montana in the interior. It is one of ten IEEE regions worldwide and is administered by IEEE Region 6 through a volunteer governance structure that coordinates engineering community activities across one of the most technically active areas in the world. The region includes major technology centers in California's Silicon Valley and Bay Area, the Seattle-area technology corridor, and defense and aerospace hubs in Southern California and the Southwest.
The region operates under the broader authority of the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities board, which sets policy for all IEEE geographic units. A regional director elected by Region 6 members serves on the IEEE Board of Directors, giving the region formal representation in global IEEE governance. The Region 6 Committee convenes regularly to address the administrative and programmatic needs of its member population.
Geographic Organization and Sections
Region 6 is organized into five geographic areas: Northeast, Northwest, Central, Southern, and Southwest. These areas aggregate the region's 35 sections and 2 subsections, which in turn host chapters aligned with IEEE technical societies and affinity groups. Each section is responsible for local programming, including technical presentations, networking events, and student activities at nearby universities and colleges.
Student branches within Region 6 are affiliated with universities and community colleges throughout the western states. The region supports student leadership training through area fall meetings and provides coordination support for student branch officers who organize technical competitions, project showcases, and career development workshops.
Technical Activities and Conferences
Region 6 coordinates a calendar of technical events that draws on the density of engineering and research institutions in the Western U.S. Chapters affiliated with IEEE societies in areas including electrical engineering, computer science, aerospace, and signal processing hold regular meetings and short courses. The region also supports co-sponsored conferences and symposia with IEEE technical societies and local university programs.
The Women in Engineering (WIE) affinity group within Region 6 organizes programs to support the professional development and visibility of women engineers across the western states. Young Professionals affinity groups within the region run mentoring and career guidance programs for engineers within the first ten years of their careers.
Engagement with Industry and Academia
Region 6 encompasses a concentration of technology companies, national laboratories, and research universities unmatched in any other IEEE region. Members include engineers and scientists at institutions ranging from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to leading semiconductor and software firms. The Engineering and Technology History Wiki documents Region 6's history as a center of innovation in electronics, computing, and aerospace engineering.
Applications
Region 6 supports professional and technical activities across a range of domains, including:
