Region 5
What Is Region 5?
Region 5 is the south-central United States geographic unit of the IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization for engineers and scientists. IEEE organizes its global membership into ten numbered regions for governance, administrative, and community purposes, with Regions 1 through 6 covering different parts of the United States. Region 5 covers a broad swath of the south-central interior, encompassing Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The region is organized into 27 Sections distributed across four geographic areas: North, East, South, and West, and serves engineers and technology professionals concentrated in industries including energy extraction and production, aerospace, telecommunications, and petrochemical processing.
The region's geographic footprint encompasses major engineering and technology centers such as Houston, Dallas, Denver, and Oklahoma City, as well as significant university research institutions that contribute to its membership base. The four-area structure allows regional governance and programming to remain responsive to the distinct industrial and institutional characteristics of areas as varied as the Colorado Front Range and the Gulf Coast petrochemical corridor.
Geographic Sections and Areas
Region 5 groups its 27 Sections across four areas. The North Area includes sections in Kansas City, Denver, Pikes Peak, High Plains, and Panhandle. The East Area encompasses Oklahoma City, St. Louis, SW Missouri, Tulsa, Wichita, and Ozark sections. The South Area covers Arkansas, Baton Rouge, Beaumont, Lafayette, New Orleans, Shreveport, and Arkansas River Valley sections. The West Area includes Central Texas, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Galveston Bay, Houston, Lone Star, Rio Grande Valley, and South Plains sections. The Region 5 areas and sections listing provides current information on each unit's geographic boundaries and officer contacts.
Governance and Leadership
The Region 5 Executive Committee consists of the Regional Director, Area Chairpersons, and representatives from Sections, student branches, and affinity groups. Area Chairpersons serve as voting members of the Executive Board, ensuring that member interests across the four geographic areas are represented in regional decision-making. The Director serves on the IEEE Board of Directors, giving the south-central US membership a direct voice in IEEE's central governance on technical, educational, standards, and policy matters. The IEEE Member and Geographic Activities board sets the overall framework within which Region 5 and the other nine regions operate.
Technical Activities and Member Programs
Region 5 supports IEEE's technical and professional development mission through conferences, workshops, and Society chapter activities tailored to its members' industries. Texas alone contains multiple Sections that serve large engineering workforces in the energy sector, including petroleum engineering, power generation, and related instrumentation. Colorado Sections serve a membership concentration in aerospace and defense. Student branches at universities including the University of Texas system, Texas A&M University, University of Oklahoma, and University of Colorado contribute substantially to the region's student membership. Regional events provide student members with engineering competitions and professional networking opportunities.
Applications
Region 5's programs and organizational infrastructure serve IEEE members across contexts including:
- Technical chapter meetings for IEEE Societies active in petroleum engineering instrumentation, power and energy, and aerospace electronics
- Student branch programs and competitions at universities in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and neighboring states
- Professional development events for engineers in the Gulf Coast energy and petrochemical industries
- Regional conferences and workshops connecting members across the south-central United States
