Region 2

What Is Region 2?

Region 2 is the eastern United States geographic unit of the IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization for engineers and scientists. IEEE divides its global membership into ten numbered regions for governance, administrative, and community engagement purposes, with Regions 1 through 6 covering different portions of the United States. Region 2 encompasses the mid-Atlantic and eastern central states, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, portions of Virginia, Ohio (excluding Toledo), and southern New Jersey. The region is organized into approximately 20 Sections serving engineers and technology professionals across that geographic area.

The region's history reflects the concentration of industrial, defense, and academic engineering activity in the mid-Atlantic corridor. The Engineering and Technology History Wiki's documentation of IEEE Region 2 traces the evolution of its predecessor sections from the early twentieth century through the formation of the modern regional structure, situating Region 2 within the broader administrative history of IEEE and its antecedent organizations.

Geographic Sections and Areas

Region 2 groups its Sections into four geographic areas. Sections span the region's full geographic extent, from Pittsburgh and Central Pennsylvania in the west through Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, and Southern New Jersey in the east, and from Erie in the north through Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and West Virginia in the south and southwest. Major Sections include Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Central Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and Delaware Bay, among others. Each Section operates as an autonomous IEEE-chartered unit responsible for local programming, student branch oversight, and technical chapter activities. The IEEE Region 2 website coordinates regional activities and provides resources for members across all Sections.

Governance and Leadership

The Region 2 Executive Committee comprises the Regional Director, Area Chairs, and representatives from Sections and affinity groups. The Director serves on the IEEE Board of Directors as a voting member, providing the region's membership with representation in the organization's central governance on technical, educational, and policy matters. Area Chairs bridge the region's leadership with individual Sections, facilitating coordination on programs that benefit from cross-Section collaboration. Student branch representatives and affinity group leaders, including those from Women in Engineering chapters, also participate in regional governance.

Merger with Region 1

IEEE approved a major administrative realignment under which, beginning January 1, 2028, Region 2 will merge with Region 1 to form a consolidated Northeastern and Eastern USA region. The combined region will retain the Region 2 designation. As described in announcements published by IEEE Region 1 on the merger, the decision reflects a review of membership distribution across regions and a goal of achieving more consistent administrative capacity. The merger will combine Region 2's mid-Atlantic base with Region 1's New England and upstate New York membership, creating one of the larger US-based IEEE regional units.

Applications

Region 2's structure and programs serve IEEE members across many contexts, including:

  • Local technical chapter activities for IEEE Societies including the Power and Energy Society and the Communications Society
  • Student branch support at universities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and neighboring states
  • Coordination of regional conferences and workshops for engineering professionals in the mid-Atlantic technology corridor
  • Professional development events for engineers in defense, energy, and biomedical industries concentrated in the region
