Region 10
What Is Region 10?
Region 10 is the Asia and Pacific geographic unit of the IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization for engineers and applied scientists. IEEE organizes its global membership into ten numbered regions: Regions 1 through 6 cover the United States, Region 7 covers Canada, Region 8 covers Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Region 9 covers Latin America, and Region 10 encompasses Asia and the Pacific. Geographically, Region 10 stretches from South Korea and Japan in the northeast to New Zealand in the south and Pakistan in the west. With more than 60,000 members and approximately 45,000 student members distributed across 58 Sections and 6 Councils, Region 10 is one of the largest and fastest-growing of IEEE's regional units.
The region's organizational history tracks the rise of engineering research and technology industries across Asia and the Pacific. The Tokyo Section, established in 1955, was among the first, followed by sections in Australia and New Zealand in the late 1960s. Subsequent decades brought rapid expansion as universities, government research institutions, and private technology industries grew across India, China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. The IEEE Region 10 organizational history documents this development, reflecting the growth of IEEE membership alongside the region's expanding engineering workforce.
Geographic Sections and Councils
Region 10 is organized into Sections grouped by country or subregion, with Councils providing coordination across densely populated countries that contain many Sections. India, for instance, is served by a Council that coordinates numerous national Sections, as is the case for China and Australia. IEEE facilities to support regional operations are located in Singapore, Beijing, Bangalore, Tokyo, and Shenzhen, reflecting the concentration of IEEE members and technical activity in those cities. The full list of IEEE Region 10 Sections and Councils details the administrative units across countries including Japan, Australia, South Korea, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Pacific Island nations.
Governance and Member Activities
The Region 10 Executive Committee governs the region through an elected Director and representatives from Sections, Councils, and affinity groups. The Director serves on the IEEE Board of Directors, providing the Asia-Pacific membership with representation in the organization's central governance. Region 10 hosts regional technical conferences and supports student branch activities at universities across the member countries. The region's large student membership reflects the scale of engineering education in Asia, where universities enroll millions of engineering students annually.
Realignment and Future Structure
IEEE approved a regional realignment plan under which, beginning January 1, 2028, Region 10 will be divided into two separate regions: Region 10 (North Asia) and a new Region 11 covering South Asia and the Pacific. The rationale for splitting the region reflects its size relative to other regions: with membership and student branch counts exceeding several other IEEE regions combined, a single Director and executive committee face administrative challenges in adequately representing such a dispersed and populous area. The division is intended to improve responsiveness and member services in both subregions.
Applications
Region 10's infrastructure and programs serve IEEE members across many contexts, including:
- Technical conferences and symposia hosted across the Asia-Pacific region
- Student branch competitions and paper contests at universities in Japan, India, Australia, and Southeast Asia
- Local technical chapter programming for IEEE Societies active in electronics, communications, and computing
- Outreach and educational activities supporting engineering workforce development across member countries
