What Is the Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society?
The Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) is a technical society within IEEE that advances the science, technology, and engineering of nuclear and plasma systems. Founded in 1949 as the IEEE Professional Group on Nuclear Science and elevated to full society status in 1972 when plasma science was formally added to its scope, NPSS brings together researchers and practitioners in areas ranging from particle accelerators and fusion technology to radiation instrumentation and nuclear medical imaging. With approximately 3,300 members worldwide, the society facilitates technical exchange through peer-reviewed journals, major international conferences, and specialized standards activities.
NPSS draws from the intersection of nuclear physics, plasma physics, electrical engineering, and biomedical science. Its technical work spans both fundamental research, such as the physics of particle acceleration and plasma confinement, and applied engineering, such as the design of radiation detectors, pulsed-power systems, and medical imaging devices. This breadth reflects the dual lineage of nuclear instrumentation engineering and plasma physics that the society has integrated since its reorganization in the early 1970s.
Technical Committees and Scope
The IEEE NPSS organizes its activities through eight technical committees, each corresponding to a distinct subdomain: Fusion Technology, Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences, Particle Accelerator Science and Technology, Plasma Science and Applications, Pulsed Power Science and Technology, Radiation Effects, Radiation Instrumentation, and Computer Applications in Nuclear and Plasma Science. Each committee sponsors conference sessions, proposes standards activities, and identifies topics for the society's publications.
The Radiation Instrumentation committee covers the development of detectors for ionizing radiation across particle types, from photon and neutron detectors to charged-particle sensors used in both basic research and industrial applications. The Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences committee bridges nuclear engineering and biomedical imaging, covering technologies such as positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The Radiation Effects committee addresses the impact of radiation on electronic components, materials, and systems, a topic of direct relevance to space systems, nuclear facilities, and particle accelerator environments.
Publications
NPSS publishes four peer-reviewed journals through IEEE. The IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science covers theory and practice in nuclear instrumentation, radiation measurement, reactor controls, and radiation effects on electronics. The IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science focuses on plasma physics phenomena, plasma sources, and plasma applications including thermonuclear fusion research. The IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, which NPSS co-sponsors with other IEEE societies, is one of the highest-impact journals in biomedical imaging. The IEEE Transactions on Radiation and Plasma Medical Sciences covers the growing intersection of plasma and radiation technologies with medical applications, including radiation therapy and plasma medicine.
Conferences and Awards
NPSS sponsors or co-sponsors a portfolio of major conferences on an annual or biennial schedule. The NPSS conferences archive lists annual events including the Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (NSS-MIC), the International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS), and the IEEE International Conference on the Physics of Plasmas and Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion.
