What Is the Nikola Tesla Award Committee?
The Nikola Tesla Award Committee is the body within the IEEE Awards governance structure responsible for administering and adjudicating the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award, one of the Institute's Technical Field Awards. The committee evaluates nominations, applies defined selection criteria, and recommends recipients to the IEEE Technical Field Awards Council and the broader IEEE Awards Board for final approval. Its mandate is to recognize outstanding contributions to the generation and utilization of electric power, the domain in which the award's namesake made his most consequential technical contributions.
The award itself was established in 1975, created through an agreement between the IEEE Power Engineering Society and the IEEE Board of Directors. It honors individuals or teams of up to three people and consists of a bronze medal, a certificate, and an honorarium. The name commemorates Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-American electrical engineer whose development of alternating current systems, the AC induction motor, and polyphase power distribution transformed industrial electricity supply in the late nineteenth century.
