What Is NASA?

NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is a United States federal agency responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research. Established by the National Aeronautics and Space Act and operational since October 1958, the agency conducts robotic and human space missions, develops space and aeronautical technologies, and studies Earth and other bodies of the solar system through scientific instrumentation. NASA operates from its headquarters in Washington, D.C. and maintains a network of field centers, laboratories, and launch facilities across the country, including the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The agency's foundational mandate is to carry out activities in space for peaceful purposes and for the benefit of humanity. This requires NASA to span a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines: orbital mechanics and launch vehicle design, materials science, planetary geology, astrophysics, atmospheric science, and human physiology in microgravity environments, among others.

Space Exploration Missions

NASA designs and executes missions ranging from low-Earth-orbit flights to interplanetary and interstellar probes. The Apollo program, which landed twelve astronauts on the Moon between 1969 and 1972, remains the agency's most widely recognized achievement. The agency's network of science missions includes telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope, which observes the universe in infrared wavelengths, and Earth-observing satellites that monitor sea surface temperature, ice sheet extent, and greenhouse gas concentrations. NASA's aeronautical research programs investigate advanced propulsion, supersonic flight, air traffic management, and aircraft noise reduction, findings that directly inform commercial aviation development. Other significant bilateral relationships include the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). NASA publishes its scientific and technical findings as open literature and maintains open data policies for satellite-derived datasets, enabling international scientific communities to build on its mission outputs.
