Museums
What Are Museums?
Museums are permanent institutions that collect, conserve, research, interpret, and exhibit material and immaterial heritage for the public. The definition adopted by the International Council of Museums in 2022 frames them as not-for-profit bodies in the service of society, open and accessible, offering educational and reflective experiences. Alongside libraries and archives they form a class of educational institutions whose primary asset is a documented collection rather than a curriculum.
The technical side of museum work has expanded considerably. A modern institution runs collection databases, environmental control systems, imaging laboratories, and public-facing digital platforms, and the specialists who build them come from computer science, optics, materials science, and structural engineering as much as from art history or archaeology. The Smithsonian Institution alone holds roughly 155 million objects, specimens, and works of art, of which under one percent is on display at any time, which frames the central engineering problem: making a collection legible and usable at a scale no gallery can physically accommodate.
Collections Management and Documentation
Every object in a museum carries a record: an accession number, provenance history, condition reports, exhibition and loan history, and rights information. Collection management systems store these records in structured form, and interoperability across institutions depends on shared metadata schemas and controlled vocabularies for materials, techniques, place names, and artist identities. Persistent identifiers let a record be cited stably even as systems are replaced. Aggregation portals then harvest records from many institutions into a single searchable index, which is what makes cross-collection research possible without visiting each holder in turn.
Digitization and 3D Capture
Two-dimensional imaging came first, using calibrated color targets and controlled lighting so that a photograph can serve as a condition reference rather than merely an illustration. Three-dimensional capture followed, and the Smithsonian 3D digitization program has been an influential practitioner, combining laser scanning, photogrammetry, and structured light to build measurable models of specimens, artworks, and whole sites. Technique selection depends on the object: photogrammetry handles matte, textured surfaces well but struggles with polished metal and glass, while structured light gives finer geometric resolution over small volumes. Spectral imaging methods add information the eye cannot see, revealing underdrawings, erased text, and pigment composition without sampling the object.
Virtual Museums
A virtual museum presents collections and exhibitions through a digital environment rather than a physical gallery. The simplest form is a browsable online catalog with high-resolution images; more elaborate implementations reconstruct gallery spaces for navigation in a browser or a head-mounted display, letting a visitor approach an object from angles a display case would forbid. Documented projects such as the digital reconstruction of a temporary Ulisse Aldrovandi exhibition show the full workflow, from acquisition of the objects through scene assembly and publication. Virtual presentation also preserves exhibitions that would otherwise disappear when a show closes, and it extends access to visitors whose distance, cost, or mobility constraints rule out a visit.
