What Are Medical Services?

Medical services are the organized activities, interventions, and systems through which healthcare is delivered to individuals and populations. The term encompasses primary, secondary, and tertiary care provision; preventive health programs; diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; and the administrative, informational, and technological infrastructure that supports them. Medical services are studied within health systems research, biomedical engineering, and health informatics, each of which examines different dimensions of how care is organized, delivered, measured, and improved.

The quality and reach of medical services depend on clinical knowledge and on the systems that translate that knowledge into patient care. Engineers and informaticists contribute to medical services through the design of health information systems, telehealth platforms, medical devices, and quality measurement frameworks. Technology assessment and health services research provide the evidence base for decisions about which services to fund, deploy, or retire.

Healthcare Delivery Systems

Healthcare delivery systems are the organizational structures and processes through which medical services reach patients.
