What Are Medical Information Systems?
Medical information systems are integrated software and hardware platforms designed to collect, store, process, and communicate health data across the entities involved in patient care. They encompass everything from the electronic health record at a single clinic to enterprise-wide hospital information systems that coordinate scheduling, clinical documentation, laboratory results, pharmacy orders, and billing across an entire health network. The field draws on database engineering, human-computer interaction, systems integration, and health informatics to build platforms that are both technically reliable and safe for use in high-stakes clinical settings.
The importance of standardized health data exchange has pushed medical information systems toward shared communication protocols. HL7 (Health Level Seven) messaging formats and the newer HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) specification provide common data structures that allow disparate systems to exchange patient records without losing clinical meaning. Hospital Information Systems

Health Data Exchange and Integration
