What Are Marine Operations?

Marine operations are the planned and coordinated activities conducted in the open sea, coastal waters, or offshore environments, constituting a field concerned with the planning, coordination, and execution of activities conducted in the open sea, coastal waters, or offshore environments. The discipline covers a wide range of activities: deploying drilling rigs and production platforms, managing commercial shipping fleets, conducting hydrographic surveys, laying and maintaining subsea pipelines and cables, and supporting offshore energy installations including both conventional hydrocarbon extraction and emerging ocean power systems such as offshore wind and marine hydrokinetic devices. Marine operations integrates naval architecture, logistics, meteorology, and systems engineering to ensure that activities in a dynamic and hazardous environment are completed safely, on schedule, and within environmental compliance requirements.

The field draws on regulatory frameworks established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and national maritime authorities, as well as technical standards from classification societies such as DNV, Lloyd's Register, and the American Bureau of Shipping.

Offshore and Subsea Operations

Offshore operations begin with geophysical exploration, including seismic survey vessels that tow arrays of hydrophones to map subsea geological structures. Once a site is developed, marine operations support drilling, production, and maintenance activities using a fleet of specialized vessels: drillships, semi-submersible rigs, floating production storage and offloading units (FPSOs), pipe-lay barges, and anchor-handling tugs. Subsea inspection, maintenance, and repair tasks are increasingly carried out by remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), reducing the need for saturation diving. Vessel Fleet Management

Managing a fleet of operational vessels requires continuous tracking of vessel positions, fuel consumption, maintenance schedules, and cargo status. Integrated fleet management platforms draw on Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder data, satellite imagery, and onboard condition-monitoring sensors to give operators situational awareness across widely separated vessels. Ocean power installations, including offshore wind farms with maintenance service vessels and floating tidal energy converters, represent a growing segment of marine operations management. Research and policy on ocean energy integration is documented by organizations such as the International Energy Agency's Ocean Energy Systems programme and through technical studies published by IEA.

Environmental and Safety Management

Marine operations take place within regulatory frameworks requiring continuous monitoring of weather windows, sea state forecasts, and equipment certification status. Metocean (meteorology and oceanography) data services provide wave height, current, and wind forecasts that directly determine operational go or no-go decisions for crane lifts, diving operations, and cable installations. Incident prevention relies on management systems modeled on the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, a mandatory instrument under SOLAS that requires companies operating ships to maintain documented safety management systems. The IMO International Safety Management Code applies to all vessels on international voyages above defined tonnage thresholds and includes procedures for emergency preparedness and non-conformity reporting.
