What Is Lead-acid?

Lead-acid refers to the electrochemical technology based on the reaction between lead, lead dioxide, and sulfuric acid to store and release electrical energy. As a category descriptor, the term encompasses the cell chemistry, electrode materials, electrolyte composition, and associated engineering considerations that define this family of rechargeable devices. Lead-acid cells deliver a nominal voltage of approximately 2 volts per cell and are assembled in multicell configurations to produce battery packs at 6, 12, 24, and 48 volts for diverse applications. The technology, introduced by Gaston Planté in 1859, is the oldest rechargeable electrochemical system still in widespread commercial use and accounts for the majority of installed secondary battery capacity worldwide by energy.

The distinction between "lead-acid" as a chemistry class and specific product types such as flooded batteries, valve-regulated batteries, or lead-carbon batteries is important: all share the same fundamental electrode reactions but differ substantially in construction, performance envelope, and suitable applications.

Electrochemical Principles

The lead-acid cell operates by the double-sulfate reaction. In the fully charged state, the negative electrode consists of porous sponge lead and the positive electrode consists of lead dioxide. During discharge, both electrodes are oxidized and reduced, respectively, to lead sulfate, releasing electrons through the external circuit while consuming sulfuric acid from the electrolyte. The reverse reactions occur on charge. The open-circuit voltage of a fully charged cell is approximately 2.10–2.15 volts, and the state of charge correlates closely with electrolyte specific gravity, which can be measured directly with a hydrometer. Cell Types and Configurations

Flooded (vented) lead-acid cells hold the electrolyte as free liquid and require periodic topping with distilled water to compensate for electrolytic losses of hydrogen and oxygen during charging. Valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) cells, which include absorbent glass mat (AGM) and gel designs, immobilize the electrolyte and seal the cell, relying on internal oxygen recombination at the negative plate to minimize gas evolution and eliminate maintenance watering. VRLA batteries support installation in enclosed spaces and any orientation, making them suitable for uninterruptible power supplies, telecommunications, and sealed automotive applications. Degradation and Maintenance

The three primary degradation mechanisms in lead-acid systems are irreversible sulfation, positive active material softening and shedding, and grid corrosion. Irreversible sulfation occurs when large lead sulfate crystals form on the plates during extended low-charge operation and resist reconversion during subsequent charging. Positive plate degradation results from volumetric cycling stresses that progressively reduce contact between active material particles. Grid corrosion on the positive plate forms a resistive oxide layer that increases internal impedance over time. Lead-carbon hybrid designs, which incorporate activated carbon into the negative electrode, substantially reduce sulfation susceptibility and improve performance under high-rate partial-state-of-charge cycling. Research published in Electrochemical Energy Reviews shows that carbon additive selection, surface area, and pore structure all influence how effectively sulfation is suppressed and how much the charge acceptance rate improves.
