What Are Information Resources?

Information resources are the data, documents, databases, and knowledge assets that an organization or system collects, maintains, and makes available to support its operations, research, or services. The term encompasses both digital and physical artifacts: journal articles, technical reports, structured datasets, institutional records, software documentation, and the systems that store and provide access to them. In an organizational context, information resources are treated as strategic assets, and their effective management is the subject of information resource management as a professional discipline.

The scope of information resources has expanded substantially with digitization. Physical collections in libraries and archives have been complemented or replaced by online databases, institutional repositories, and cloud-hosted data services. This transition has raised new questions about discovery, interoperability, and long-term preservation: a resource is only useful if it can be found, accessed in a format compatible with the requester's tools, and trusted to remain available over time. Standards bodies including ISO and NISO have developed metadata schemas and persistent identifier schemes to address these challenges.

Types of Information Resources

Information resources differ along several dimensions: their format (text, numeric data, image, audio, video), their level of processing (raw data, processed datasets, synthesized reports), their access model (open access, subscription, proprietary), and their provenance (primary sources such as original research data vs. secondary sources such as literature reviews). The usability of information resources depends on how they are organized and what access mechanisms are provided. Full-text indexing enables keyword search across large document collections. Persistent identifiers such as DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) and ORCiDs provide stable references to documents and authors, ensuring that citations remain resolvable as resources move between hosting platforms. Access control systems determine who can view, download, or modify resources, enforcing embargo periods, license terms, and institutional subscription boundaries.
