What Are IEEE Technical Activities?

IEEE Technical Activities refers to the organized body of work carried out by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers through its member societies, technical councils, and associated committees to advance technology and engineering knowledge. This domain encompasses the publication of technical journals and conference proceedings, the development and maintenance of technical standards, the administration of awards recognizing technical achievement, and the support of professional development programs for engineers and scientists worldwide. The primary governing structure for these activities is the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB), the largest of IEEE's six major governing boards.

The Technical Activities Board was established in 1965 to coordinate the activities of IEEE's technical groups, which subsequently became the society structure familiar today. As of the mid-2020s, TAB oversees 39 societies, 7 councils, and a range of technical communities that collectively produce the bulk of IEEE's conferences, publications, and standards output. According to the IEEE Technical Community Spotlight, if an engineer is reading an IEEE publication or presenting at an IEEE conference, TAB has almost certainly had a hand in making it happen.

Awards Activities

IEEE administers hundreds of technical awards through its societies, technical councils, and the IEEE Awards Board, recognizing contributions ranging from foundational research to engineering practice. Society-level awards include best paper prizes, outstanding engineer designations, and society-specific medals. At the IEEE organization level, the awards program includes the IEEE Medal of Honor, the highest individual recognition in the electrical and electronics fields, as well as medals, recognitions, and prize paper awards spanning every major technical domain. These programs are coordinated through TAB to avoid duplication and to ensure consistent standards of rigor across the society structure. The IEEE Awards Board maintains the full catalog of IEEE-level honors and their nomination processes.

Professional Activities

Beyond publications and conferences, IEEE Technical Activities includes a portfolio of professional development programs designed to support engineers across the career lifecycle. Technical societies host webinars, short courses, and tutorials tied to conference programs, and many offer online learning modules through the IEEE Learning Network. Societies also maintain technical committees that serve as working groups on specific sub-fields, publishing roadmaps, position statements, and educational materials for practitioners. TAB's Future Directions Committee identifies emerging technology areas where IEEE should invest new society or council formation, most recently focusing on topics such as quantum computing, brain-computer interfaces, and sustainable technology. Quality oversight for publications and society portfolios is provided by the Periodicals Review and Advisory Committee (PRAC) and the Society/Council Review Committee (SCRC), which conduct five-year reviews of each society's scope and publication portfolio. The IEEE Xplore digital library serves as the primary access point for the technical output of all IEEE societies and councils.
