IEEE Staff
What Is IEEE Staff?
IEEE Staff refers to the full-time professional employees who carry out the day-to-day operations of the IEEE, supporting the organization's mission to advance technology for the benefit of humanity. While the IEEE's technical work is largely driven by its volunteer members, including the elected officers, society leaders, standards committee participants, and conference organizers who contribute their time without compensation, the organization depends on a permanent staff of more than 1,000 employees to provide continuity, institutional expertise, and operational capacity. These employees handle the administrative, editorial, technical, financial, and communications functions that keep the IEEE's programs running.
IEEE staff operations are centered at the organization's headquarters in Piscataway, New Jersey, with additional offices in cities including Washington, D.C., and global offices in Asia and Europe. The IEEE's global offices in China, Japan, India, Singapore, and Europe extend the reach of the headquarters operation into major regional markets, with on-the-ground staff focused on member services, government relations, and partnerships with academic and industrial organizations in those regions.
Organizational Structure
IEEE staff are organized under the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, who is the senior full-time employee and serves as the chief operating officer for the entire enterprise. The Executive Director leads the Management Council, which is comprised of senior executives responsible for the major functional areas of the organization: publications and technology products, member and geographic activities, educational activities, standards operations, and organizational infrastructure. This structure mirrors the dual complementary framework of the IEEE organization itself, which operates both geographic and technical dimensions in parallel. Staff units supporting geographic activities work with region and section volunteers, while staff units supporting technical activities work with society and council volunteers.
Corporate Activities Support
IEEE staff provide the operational backbone for IEEE's corporate activities, which encompass publishing, standards development, conference services, member credentialing, and financial management. The publications staff includes editors, production specialists, and digital platform engineers who manage the content and delivery of more than 200 journals, transactions, and magazines through IEEE Xplore and related platforms. Standards staff support the approximately 1,000 active IEEE working groups that develop and maintain technical standards across electrical, electronic, and software domains. Conference staff assist the society volunteers who organize the hundreds of conferences sponsored by IEEE societies each year, providing contracting, logistics, and financial administration support. These activities collectively constitute the practical substance of IEEE's value to its technical communities.
Professional Development and Administrative Functions
Beyond program delivery, IEEE staff include human resources, legal, finance, and information technology teams that support internal operations. The organization has invested significantly in digital transformation of its member-facing systems, modernizing platforms for membership management, standards access, and publication delivery. Staff also support IEEE's public affairs and government relations activities, representing the organization's positions on technology policy issues before legislatures and regulatory agencies. The IEEE Board of Directors and Executive Staff page provides current information on the executive leadership team that directs the professional workforce.
