IEEE Press Editorial Board
What Is the IEEE Press Editorial Board?
The IEEE Press Editorial Board is the governing advisory body for IEEE Press, the book publishing unit of the IEEE. Composed of technical experts drawn from universities, national laboratories, and industry research organizations, the board provides scientific expertise and guidance on the book publishing program, reviews and approves editorial policies, and supports the Editor-in-Chief in identifying high-quality book projects across the fields of electrical engineering, computer science, and allied technical disciplines. The board operates under the authority of the IEEE Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB), which oversees IEEE's full portfolio of publications.
The board's composition is intentionally international, drawing members from institutions across North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Current members represent universities including UCLA, Yale, the University of Manitoba, the Singapore University of Technology and Design, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, among others. This geographic breadth reflects the global character of IEEE's technical membership and ensures that the book program addresses research traditions and professional needs across different engineering communities.
Roles and Responsibilities
The IEEE Press Editorial Board performs several distinct functions within the publication process. It reviews and advises on policies governing the IEEE Press imprint, recommends operational improvements, and provides expert judgment on the importance and quality of proposed book titles. Board members identify emerging and active technical areas where book-length treatments are needed, recommend potential authors with the appropriate expertise, and contribute to the peer review of manuscripts submitted to certain IEEE Press imprints. The IEEE Press editorial leadership page lists current board members and their institutional affiliations.
Relationship to the Editor-in-Chief and Wiley Partnership
Day-to-day editorial direction rests with the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Press, who serves as the final authority on acceptance or rejection of manuscripts. The Editor-in-Chief works alongside IEEE Press staff, Wiley staff, and board members to identify potential book projects, initiate proposals, and move accepted manuscripts through production. Since IEEE Press operates under a partnership with John Wiley and Sons that has been in place since 2001, the editorial board's scientific oversight role is distinct from Wiley's production and distribution functions. The board provides the technical credibility; Wiley provides the publishing infrastructure.
Governance and Appointment
Board members may be proposed by the board itself, by the Editor-in-Chief, or by the publisher, and are approved by the PSPB Nominations and Appointments Committee. The IEEE Publication Services and Products Board operations manual governs appointment procedures, term lengths, and the board's formal relationship to the broader IEEE publication governance structure. This framework ensures continuity of expertise while allowing the board's composition to evolve as the technical field changes.
Applications
The IEEE Press Editorial Board supports work across:
- Graduate and professional textbook development in engineering and computer science
- Reference handbook and monograph publication for active research communities
- Identification of emerging technical subfields requiring systematic book-length treatment
- Quality assurance for the Wiley-IEEE Press imprint across seventeen specialized series
- Cross-disciplinary publishing in areas where engineering and science converge
