What Are IEEE Member and Geographic Activities?

IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) are the programs and organizational structures within IEEE responsible for supporting, coordinating, and growing IEEE's global membership network. It oversees the geographic infrastructure through which IEEE members engage with their professional communities at the local and regional level, and it guides the recruitment, retention, and volunteer programs that sustain the organization worldwide. The IEEE MGA operates as a board within the IEEE governance structure, with elected and appointed volunteers drawn from the membership at large.

MGA connects IEEE's central operations to more than 430,000 members in over 160 countries. Its work spans policy development, resource allocation, and the support of geographic units from large regional bodies down to individual student branches and affinity groups.

Regions and Sections

The foundational geographic units under MGA are Regions and Sections. IEEE currently operates 10 Regions, each serving as an administrative and advisory body covering a defined geographic territory that may encompass part or all of one or more countries. A Region maintains a committee or board of governors that represents member interests and advises the IEEE Board of Directors on matters relevant to its geography.

Within each Region are IEEE Sections, the primary organizational unit for IEEE members in a given locality. A Section must comprise a minimum of 50 IEEE voting members to be chartered. There are currently more than 340 Sections worldwide. Sections organize technical meetings, short courses, and local events while acting as the primary point of contact for members seeking involvement in IEEE activities.

Chapters and Local Groups

Chapters are sub-units of Sections, aligned with IEEE technical societies or councils. A Section may host multiple Chapters, each focused on a specific technical domain such as power electronics, signal processing, or robotics. Chapters provide members with focused engagement, including lecture series, student competitions, and collaborative research events that reflect the specialized interests of their parent societies.

Beyond Chapters, MGA also sanctions Affinity Groups, including the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) groups, IEEE Young Professionals, and IEEE Life Members groups. Student Branches operate at colleges and universities, connecting students to the professional IEEE community before they enter the workforce. These groups collectively extend MGA's reach into early-career and underrepresented segments of the engineering population.

Member Engagement and Events

MGA coordinates several signature events that bring the geographic infrastructure together. The IEEE Sections Congress, held every three years, convenes section officers and volunteers from around the world to share best practices, discuss governance, and set direction for member-facing programs. MGA also publishes resources and toolkits for geographic unit leaders, and it manages the metrics and analytics that track membership health across regions and sections.

Recruitment and retention programs managed through MGA target key transitions: student-to-graduate-member conversion, mid-career re-engagement, and outreach into geographies with growing engineering populations but historically low IEEE penetration.
