What Are IEEE Chapters?

IEEE Chapters are local technical units of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, organized within a Region, Section, or Geographic Council, that bring IEEE's technical societies and councils into the communities where members live and work. Each Chapter is affiliated with one or more of IEEE's 46 technical societies and serves as the primary point of contact for members interested in a specific engineering discipline at the local level. Chapters provide a venue for technical presentations, networking, professional development, and community engagement that complements the global activities of IEEE's societies and the broader geographic structure of Regions and Sections.

To form a Chapter, a minimum of twelve IEEE voting members from a given society must petition the relevant geographic and technical organizational units. This threshold ensures that Chapters represent a genuine community of practice rather than a nominal administrative entity.

Structure and Types

IEEE Chapters come in several forms to accommodate the diversity of IEEE's membership and technical portfolio. A single-society Chapter is affiliated with one IEEE technical society, such as the IEEE Signal Processing Society or the IEEE Power and Energy Society. Joint Chapters combine members from two or more societies in locations where individual society memberships are too small to sustain separate Chapters. Technical Council Chapters are affiliated with one of IEEE's technical councils, which address cross-disciplinary areas. Student Branch Chapters operate within university Student Branches and allow students to engage with a specific society's technical content while still in school. The organizational relationships and formation procedures for all Chapter types are documented by IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA).

Activities and Events

The core activities of IEEE Chapters are technical meetings: invited lectures, distinguished lecturer visits, panel discussions, workshops, and joint events with other Chapters or professional organizations. IEEE societies maintain Distinguished Lecturer programs that fund travel and speaking fees for prominent researchers and practitioners to present at local Chapters worldwide, providing members access to expertise that would otherwise require attending major international conferences. Chapters also organize hackathons, student competitions, and local versions of society-sponsored events. Beyond technical programming, Chapters serve as a pipeline for IEEE volunteerism, recruiting members to serve on conference committees, publication boards, and governance bodies. The MGA Chapter Data page tracks active Chapters by society, region, and section.

Governance and Support

Each Chapter elects its own officers, typically including a chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer, who are responsible for programming, finances, and reporting to the parent Section. IEEE MGA provides operational guidance, funding programs, and tools to support Chapter activities. Chapters with active programming may qualify for support funds tied to event attendance and volunteer hours. Section-Chapter relationships are defined in the IEEE Bylaws and the MGA Operations Manual, ensuring that local units operate consistently with IEEE's broader governance framework. Additional resources for Chapter formation, operations, and officer training are available through how to create a new IEEE Chapter.

Applications

IEEE Chapters support a wide range of professional and community activities, including:

  • Hosting technical lectures and workshops for local engineers and researchers
  • Connecting students and early-career professionals with experienced practitioners
  • Supporting IEEE society outreach and member recruitment at the local level
  • Organizing regional competitions, hackathons, and student project showcases
  • Facilitating collaboration between industry, academia, and government within a geographic area
