What Is IEEE Chapter News?

IEEE Chapter News refers to the communications, newsletters, and informational publications produced by and for the local geographic and technical units of IEEE known as Chapters. These publications keep Chapter officers, members, and volunteers informed about local meeting schedules, technical events, volunteer opportunities, governance updates, and resources available from IEEE's Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) organization. Chapter News flows both downward from IEEE headquarters and MGA to local units, and upward through reports and updates that Chapters share with their parent Sections, Regions, and technical societies.

Chapter Connections Newsletter

The primary centralized channel for IEEE Chapter News is the Chapter Connections newsletter, issued every other month to all Chapter Officers and Chapter Coordinators. Chapter Connections provides practical guidance on running Chapter operations, announcements about funding programs, updates to MGA policies affecting local units, and spotlights on successful Chapter events from around the world. Information from Chapter Connections feeds into local Chapter newsletters and websites, giving volunteers a ready source of current institutional information. Archived issues and subscription information are available through IEEE Member and Geographic Activities.

Local Chapter Publications

Individual IEEE Chapters frequently produce their own newsletters, websites, and email bulletins to communicate directly with their local membership. These local publications announce upcoming talks and workshops, report on recent technical presentations, highlight member achievements, and share information about regional conferences and student branch activities. The content varies widely by Chapter, reflecting the diversity of disciplines and geographic settings across IEEE's more than 344 Sections and several thousand Chapters worldwide. Some Chapters publish monthly newsletters; others issue periodic bulletins tied to event calendars. The MGA Chapter Data page tracks active Chapters and their parent organizations.

MGA Scoop and Regional Newsletters

In addition to Chapter-level publications, IEEE MGA produces the SCOOP newsletter, sent monthly to Section, Area, and Council chairs, treasurers, webmasters, and newsletter editors. SCOOP covers governance news, policy updates, and procedural guidance relevant to all geographic units, including Sections, Councils, and Chapters alike. Individual IEEE Regions also produce their own newsletters, such as the IEEE Region 4 Newsletter, which covers activities across the north-central United States. These regional publications aggregate news from multiple Sections and Chapters, providing a broader view of activity across a geographic unit that may encompass dozens of local organizations. Regional newsletters often include summaries of Chapter-level events, announcements about regional conferences, and profiles of member volunteers whose contributions span multiple local units.
